Hi,
we are moving to Indonesia from Alaska next summer. I'm sewing from 6 years now and I need to know if there is any group where I can join (I don't like quilting...sorry) and also I need to know if I should carry my brother sewing machine (which works at 110v) and the serger or I can find the machines there without selling a kidney. I suppose that I shoudl find good fabric, there is any place in particular? what about patterns and notions? Thanks

There are machines here at reasonable prices. Nevertheless, if you have the benefit of a company financed move, I would bring the Brothers and the serger. Transformers to convert 220 to 110 are easily purchased and not particularly expensive.

My wife brought her Viking from the Midwest several years ago; works fine on a transformer purchased locally.

As for sewing groups, I haven't a clue. Perhaps other Forum members can be more helpful.

If you are moving from Alaska to Indonesia (Jakarta?), jet lag may not be a big problem; climate lag might require a bit more adjustment. Good luck with the move.

My wife loves sewing and wants to bring her Pfaff and also her quilting machine. I didn't see anything searching so could you please give me a general idea what import duties/taxes on her Viking machine were? thanks...

I brought the Viking to Indonesia in a box as checked luggage on one of several short visits to the USA after we moved to Jakarta. Th package was not opened by customs and even if it had been, I doubt that I would have been asked to pay duty on an obviously used personal household item.

I was under the impression that expats were routinely charged import duty on household goods brought into Indonesia. So much I have no clue about...

The machine you are curious about sits on tubular rails and is able to move in X/Y directions during operation. The machine is special in that it does not run unless it senses movement by the operator. The stitch speed is dynamic, depending on the speed the operator moves the machine on the frame. The result is that stitches are even throughout the piece. I've attached an image of a model similar to wife's machine.

I doubt that a few hobby sewers with household grade machines are going to be interested in industrial garment cutters and the associated software. But you never know until you ask.

I know some shops, including online shops that specialized in it.

Just land here first and we can meet for a coffee while you compile the list of things that you need.
It won't be difficult to settle down here.

Besides, we're also driving on the same side of the road as if you were in UK.

Hello everyone, I cannot sew, but I would love to learn. If you know of any English sewing courses in Jakarta please let me know. I checked the fashion schools and they are too expensive and they require me to complete a degree. I just want to know how to make cushions etc. Nothing big, I just want to get started, I am a quick learner. I did sewing (clothing & textiles) in school (it was mandatory for girls), but it was mostly needlework and the sewing was done by hand. I want to buy a sewing machine.

It would also be great to meet all the sewers in this thread.

Hi Prettypatty, I can't sew but I grow up in a household of cooks and seamstresses.

I know where to get the sewing materials and machines but sewing machines actually freak me out. My husband actually CAN work with sewing machine, knitting stuff, and making embroideries.

I'm completely lost in that department. LOL. But give me a working kitchen, some baking items, and I'll make a very nice cake from it.
