By : A. Muh. Ibnu Aqil (The Jakarta Post) , 17 Sep 2021

[President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, alongside other top-ranking government officials, has been found guilty of negligence for failing to tackle chronic air pollution in Jakarta, the Central Jakarta District Court ruled on Thursday...

In the ruling read on Thursday, presiding judge Saifuddin Zuhri said the officials were found to have “violated the law” and ordered them to tighten environmental regulations, improve air pollution monitoring systems and mandate periodical emission tests for older vehicles as part of efforts to improve air quality. The bench ordered the President to improve the national ambient air quality standard to protect the health of the people, environment, ecosystems and vulnerable groups. They also ordered the environment and forestry minister to coordinate efforts to control transboundary emissions in the Greater Jakarta area, which overlaps with cities of other provincial administrations, such as Tangerang in Banten as well as Depok, Bogor, and Bekasi in West Java. The judges also ordered the health minister to start research efforts on the health impact from air pollution in Jakarta....

Meanwhile, Greenpeace's Bondan Andriyanu said ...“For all Indonesians, this is a step to obtain the right to clean air as this verdict has served as its legal precedent,” ..

Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan posted a tweet hours after the verdict saying the Jakarta Administration would not file an appeal in the case, adding that it was ready to implement the ruling handed by the court ...Anies had previously said in 2020 that air pollution had contributed to about 5.5 million diseases in Jakarta, costing the city about Rp 6.8 trillion (US$ 476 million) in health expenses.
