I will on a research fellowship in Jogjakarta starting October 1. Once I start the grant, I will be able to get KITAS. However, as I will be bringing my family, I am hoping to come to Indonesia in August, before the start of my grant, so that my child can begin the school year in Indonesia (we would then leave the country and then return with the new visa). We'll be sending him to a private school. For August/September, I assume we will be on a tourist or sosial budaya visa. Does anyone know if we will be allowed to send him to school if we are on such a visa?

(1) Unfortunately it is difficult to make a plan because not all visas are now available due to the virus pandemic .
(2) Up to now I think only VOA for tourism ; Tourism , Business and Retirement Visas are available (for common people) .
(3) As far as I understand Immigration will not care if a foreigner go to school with any kind of visa , although there is a specific Indonesian visa for students . But unfortunately Indonesia also has a permission to study (for foreigners and Indonesians) , which I am not sure if it is the same permission that I heard for getting the Immigration's Student Visa .
As far as I know there have been 2 ways foreign students study in Indonesia :
- first getting a 60 days Cultural Visit Visa (sponsored by the school) than later converting it into an one year Student eITAS or KITAS ; or
- getting an one year Student Visa (sponsored by the school) directly , which turns into the Student eITAS or KITAS soon after arriving (but must request) .
The easier option is this second option , but I guess it is less common maybe due to the required government documents that most schools are not aware of .

Update :
So if your sponsor(s) cannot provide you with the definitive eITAS/KITAS (Research and Student for yor child) , JUST NOW , the best option is the 30 days (extendable for 30 days more) Visa-On-Arrival (no sponsor needed) or 60 days Social Cultural Visa (sponsor required) . But be sure you are eligible for the Visa-On-Arrival (not everybody is , depend on your citizenship) .
The Social Cultural Visa has the advantage that you can get future new visa without the need to leave Indonesia and , in your child's case , can even be converted (no new visa required) into a Student KITAS if the original Visa was sponsored by the school . Maybe you can also convert yours into a Research KITAS with the correct sponsorship .

The one year or 2 years Student Visa was available and now the one year Research Visa is also available , if your sponsors are able to request them .
Note : These Visas will become eITAS or KITAS within one month after entering Indonesia (you must go to a Immigration Office for that)
