BPJS on spouse sponsored KITAP?

My husband and I finally got round to going to the BPJS office to register for insurance for the whole family only to be told I am not eligible as I'm not working for a registered company in Indonesia. I'm coming up to my final few months on my first spouse KITAP, am on the KK and have a KTP. I have plenty of friends in exactly the same situation that have BPJS so I'm not sure why I can't get it. Any ideas?

I have heard this problem on the expat indo forum , maybe you can contact the poster and help each other , I have a kitap married and enrolled with bpjs around 6 months after the start of the program . Please post your progress for other members , good luck?*

Can anyone please advise the correct answer to my query.
I have a spouse sponsored KITAP (not a retirement KITAP.)
I live in Lampung , Sumatra but do not work in Indonesia any longer but sometimes work overseas.
I am told by the local BPJS office that I need a work permit to qualify for a the BPJS health cover.
Is this correct or is the regulation misunderstood by the local office ?

I've posted on another forum on FB for wives of Indonesian men and get a mixed bag of answers. Some are already on and some have had no problem at all. A few like me have been told it's a no go. So frustrating! I'll check the expat indo forum as well. Thanks!

(1) I did a quick search in the internet and it seems this may be the idea . The Law which created the BPJS , UU no.40 Tahun 2004 , in its Article 1 , item 8 states : "Participants are everyone who have paid contribution , including foreigners who have worked for at least 6 (six) months in Indonesia."

If there is no revision of the Law or other Regulation including more foreigners , this may be the official rule regarding foreigners .

(2) Yes , some members of this Forum got it by holding KITAP sponsored by Indonesian spouse , but not recently . I guess that because the BPJS Kesehatan is having deficit , its officers are becoming less willing to accept foreigners not working in Indonesia .

Although BPJS knows there are foreigners participants who do not receive wage , I guess that maybe BPJS thinks these foreigners are : foreign journalists , foreign priests , foreigners working in Embassies and foreign non-profit organizations , ..

I would suggest your spouse contact bpjs kesehatan wa customer service , they will confirm after 6 months residence on a married kitas / kitap you can apply for bpjs ,best of luck.

Actually it should still be possible. I recently got my BPJS based on a spouse KITAP. I do remember the process being a bit more complicated since NIK numbers for foreigners need to be manually checked (they?re not online like the Indonesian ones). To add me to the family BPJS there was some online form that needed to be filled out using a code for spouses. The BPJS office of Jakarta Barat understands the procedure to add a foreign spouse of a WNI. Maybe you could contact them for info.

This is the first I have ever heard of the BPJS. Just a quick search tells me this is some kind of government backed insurance. Could someone explain a little more to me about this? From what I can see so far, you shouldn't expect to get this unless you have paid into the system.

(a) There is not much more than I wrote in post no.4 above . It is a government operated paid health system (assuming BPJS Kesehatan , BPJS is more than just Kesehatan) .

(b) If you are a foreigner , you must be eligible , must register , and pay monthly .

Mixed messages, and no updates on this topic for over a year now. Would love to hear from anyone what is the latest news. My situation; Indonesian wife, married over ten years/ wife sponsored kitap up for renewal next year (will apply for lifetime kitap)/ separate KK/ bpjs not possible as per recent information when we called the information number/ have worked in Indonesia years ago for roughly a 2 years period and was issued a kitap which I -stupid enough- did not renew when living overseas with family for a 5 year period.

(w) I didn't see anything yet . I would guess that there is no interest of the Indonesian government to include more foreigners in this system that is having a big deficit .

(x) Some foreigners (married with Indonesians) had gotten a single KK , which I guess increase your possibility to be included in the BPJS system (I heard that when an Indonesian wants to be in BPJS Kesehatan , all family members in the KK also must be too - I think this is because otherwise many would put only the old sick people of the family there) .

(y) Now employers must register all employees (including foreigners) in BPJS . Are you sure you were not registered there ?

(z) I would not renew too . Living abroad with a KITAP would oblige you to come to Indonesia every year (otherwise the KITAS is automatically cancelled) and you would have to get a new MERP after each 2 years .

Thank you for your response. Re (y) I could have been registered, but this was more than 10 years back, will verify with bpjs if by chance I am registered in their system (or ever was). I was not issued an insurance card back then, and never went to a hospital, clinic or doctor at that time (I did receive a tax card). Re (z) in hindsight maybe not to clever to not keep it valid as we were planning to return to Indonesia after our time overseas, we then had to start from scratch after our return.

The BPJS was last revised by UU no.24 of year 2011 and at that time many employers didn't register their employees . Only 2 years later a Regulation (PP no.84 year 2013) stated a fine to companies with 10 or more employees for not registering them .
