Not necessary to stay in Jakarta during the whole process , but at the beginning of the process Immigration may go to the KTP's address to check and talk to you two , or may ask you two to go to the Jakarta's Kantor Imigrasi for an interview + a proof of Jakarta's residency (Surat Keterangan Domisili from Kantor Kecamatam/Kelurahan) . And some weeks later , you need to go to the Jakarta's Kantor Imigrasi for digital photo/fingerprints/signature . This with or without an agent .

And if you hire an agent , he/she probably will choose to go through a VITAS (In this Forum I never heard of a case where an agent chose it through a Sosbud Visa) .

And after getting the KITAS (better get an Exit Re-entry Permit too , if you need to travel abroad) you will need to report your move to Bali (there are things to do at Jakarta's Kantor Imigrasi and Bali' Kantor Imigrasi) . A poster here said you will need to get a KTP from the new home , before doing the city's Kantor Imigrasi's change (not reporting the address change may be penalized by jail term + fine) .

• Hi Marcus,
Thanks again for the valuable information. As for house, it belongs to one of my wife's aunt. so i hope that will not be an issue if the authorities provide us with the date that they will visit. I have already seen the process with the agents and VITAS is the way they do it and not through sosbud. Let me see if i can do the process through batam as my visa still has time to expire. As for prints and signature i already am aware that i need to go to jakarta. Going there once and coming back is not a problem but staying there all the time might be. Anyways thanks again for the information

cheers
M

(a) Immigration normally does not provide a date for the visit . At least one poster here said they had to wait more than one week for the officers to visit them .

(b) I would do it in Batam . You can get a Batam's KTP/KK easily/cheaply and probably will not take more than one month . And by starting a KITAS process in Batam , you will not need to go to Jakarta (can deal with Jakarta's Immigration Directorate by courier/mail) .
Note : Although if you didn't get the Jakarta's "Surat Pindah" then you may need to go there for it .

Also better than get the KITAS in Jakarta , is to get it in Bali , after you move there next year .

• Has anyone ever had any luck renewing a Kitas early? Say two months before expiration?

So far I have no issue getting those in Cianjur for my KITAS(KTP) & KITAP(KTP&KK even they merge together with my wife) less then a week. Need to pay the std admin fee and a small token of kopi money.

I think you lose a month or two depending on how early you do it.

• No body ask kopi money in Batam immigration . The counter is specially serve foreigners which is different building with local for passport and others application.
Most of the officers working here are quite young and very kind for explaining if ask questions.

Yes, you can. Especially before the long holiday my ex-company usually arrange for renewing 2 months before expiration for those expiration near to x'mas and Muslim new year.
Or if you have other reason, just tell them. such like you need to back to home country and when come back the KITAS are should be expired.

No, if you renewing the KITAS early 1-2 months. You will not lose the days. They follow the last KITAS date and only change the year.
But for MERP is yes, it based on the date apply, not follow the date of expiration than extension. I had such experience at least 2-3 times as I served for ex-company many years.

If you cancel the present KITAS and get a new one , yes .

If you extend the present KITAS , no , you don't lose any day (or at least , I didn't lose) .

• I think this matter, which is an important one, seems to be decided case by case. I have experienced in Jakarta a 'shortening' when applying just 6 weeks early. I'd like to hear from others. Is there a rule?

I did. My last KITAS expired 10 Oct., 14 I applied for the next one on 8 Sept., 14. My KITAS II now expires on 9 September, 2015.

• Thanks. Now I feel validated. The way I see it, we are giving them 750 000 rupiah divided by 12 each year.

• This is always true, and not just in Indonesia. The initial visa stamp has a time limit and some countries will count the validity of the Bisnis or Sosbud from the date it is granted, not the date of initial entry.

OTOH, I discovered that you can get the time back on the other end. For example, Imigrasi explicitly told me once at exit in Jakarta that if I re-enter the day before a multiple entry expires, they will give me 60 days from that date of entry. And I did something like that the following year.

However, I don't think any of this applies to ITAS or ITAP. Although my ITAS is from date of entry not date of VITAS in New York (nor date when Kan Im stamped the ITAS and gave a KITAS), there is no "other end" to make up the difference as there would be in a multiple entry visa.
