Hello everyone, this thread is loaded with fascinating information and probably contains the answers I'm looking for. My problem is time..I don't have very much of it and I wonder if anyone can help me out. I have a kitas sponsored by my company which expires on August 25th. Although this is my seventh kitas with the same company, for reasons unknown, the new head of immigration in Yogya insisted that after the fifth one I had to start anew, so this is effectively my second kitas. It is also only valid for six months as my company did not want to employ me after I reached retirement age.
I have been married to an Indonesian lady for eight years and our marriage , which took place in the UK, has been validated here. We also have two children with legal dual nationality. I now want to change my kitas sponsorship to a spouse one. Ideally I would like to change to a kitap, but in the interests of simplicity I am prepared to begin with a kitas and then convert that. I consulted a 'friendly' agent who after a lot of procrastination announced that he could do the kitap process for 30 juta or the kitas alone, which would cost me a mere 16 million.
Having read some of the encouraging DIY stories on here I now want to go it alone, but as I said...I don't have a lot of time and also I can't seem to find the relevant info on these threads without reading every word.
Basically I need to know if I have enough time to complete the changeover, the method and the cost. I already have my letter from the company announcing that I no longer work for them, plus photocopies of all marriage docs etc. Any helpful advice would be very gratefully received. ThanksLast edited by Barney; 21-07-12, 12:29.

A normal agent's price for an ITAS/KITAS is around Rp4 millions , not Rp16 millions . A reasonable agent's price for a ITAP/KITAP is around Rp7 millions .
To get a ITAP/KITAP sponsored by your wife , you will need first get an ITAS/KITAS sponsored by your wife .
To get a ITAS/KITAS sponsored by your Indonesian wife , you have 3 options :
(1) To change the sponsor of your present ITAS/KITAS (theoretically simpler but , according some posters here , practically more complicated) ;
(2) Applying for a VITAS (Visa ITAS) pre-approval in Jakarta , cancelling your present ITAS/KITAS (getting an EPO , ..) , leaving Indonesia and getting the VITAS at an Indonesian Embassy , then applying for a ITAS/KITAS within 7 days after returning to Indonesia ;
(3) Cancelling your present ITAS/KITAS , leaving Indonesia , getting a Social Cultural Visit Visa - single entry (Sosbud Visa - single entry) sponsored by your wife in an Indonesian Embassy nearby , returning to Indonesia , and then converting the Sosbud Visa into an ITAS/KITAS within the validity of the visa/extensions (150 days maximum) .
This is my recommended option (see below how to do it yourself) .

I recently completed a change of sponsor (Marcus' option #1) from company to spouse. Honestly, it is a pain to do, but that is mostly because of the fact that many immigration officers know nothing about doing it. The process was delayed mostly by that for me. I had a little bit of trouble with KanWil MenKumHAM, because the lady who interviewed me decided she didn't like the letter that had been prepared by the company that had sponsored me and insisted on a new letter plus a photocopy of the owner's KTP and her phone number. In the end, though, I did get my change of sponsor but I admit that there was a strange change of attitude from KanWil quite suddenly (and, perhaps, because of something I'd posted on this forum).
In order to get cooperation from KanIm, I had to involve DirJenIm. If you have any trouble, don't bother banging your head against the wall of their ignorance. Simply get into contact with DirJenIm and have them speak to Immigration on your behalf. You could try going to the head of KanIm, first, if the KanIm officials don't try to prevent you...
All in all, what I did was a hassle but it wasn't really expensive. In fact, if I'm not wrong, it is the least expensive option. Aside from the Rp. 755,000 for the replacement KITAS, there was the trip to Semarang for the interview and sending the required documents there, and the minor sums of money I had to pay to various local government offices for the documents AFTER the KITAS. In other words, we paid almost nothing (unless you count the frustration and stress heheh). All told, I think we put out less than Rp1.5mil. You can't pay that little for options #2 & #3.
I wish you luck!

Many thanks to both Marcus and ReveurGAM for taking the time to reply so comprehensively. I am going to KanIm tomorrow to start the process, hopefully by changing sponsorship of my present kitas from company to spouse. If things don't go too smoothly then I may have to switch tactics and go to Singapore for a sosbud and take it from there. I'll keep you updated. Thanks again guys. ps RGam, when you say get in touch with DirjenIm, is that in Jakarta or does every regional office have one, and are they approachable by telephone?

Please be patient and check the info on this forum about changing your sponsor. As far as DirJenIm (Direktorat Jendral Imigrasi, a part of the ministry of law and human rights) is concerned, it is located in Jakarta and is unique. Regional offices, called KanWil MenKumHAM, are basically one per province outside of Jakarta. You can call DirJenIm, like I did, but if you've read this thread and others, you'll know already that calling them is no easy matter. I tried off and on over a period of weeks before getting someone on the line, and another user called over 30 times over 2-3 days before getting someone. It takes persistence. If you want an almost sure thing, visit in person. I say almost, because the person may be out of town on assignment. Good luck!

1. Get an EPO (Exit Permit Only) on due time.
2. Exit to S'pura or KL to apply for a sosbud sponsored by your indonesian wife
3. Re enter indonesia and start the conversion of your izin kunjungan (sosbud) in an izin tinggal terbatas (ITAS) as per post #1 in this thread.
4. In due time convert your ITAS in an ITAP.
By far, it will be the smoothest path. If your KITAS is only valid untill August 25th it rules out the change of sponsor solution anyway.

I would agree with Atlantis.
There's plenty of cheap flights to KL from Indonesia and accommodation/ food isn't all that expensive, S'pore is much more expensive.
Thus far changing the sosbus into a KITAS has been a smooth path for me. (see my earlier posts)

Cabral

Atlantis made a good point if your KITAS will expire next month - you don't have the time to switch sponsors.

My main concern is the holidays for Independence day and Idul Fitri, which are definitely not in my favour. Worst case scenario means a trip to Singapore or KL.
More later. Thanks for your words of support guys.

I'll PM you contact info for DirJenIm. I don't know why the KanWil lady is forcing you to go, but I think you should ask DirJenIm first.

After a hasty day trip to Jakarta I am still in shock as to how smoothly everything went. I took an overnight train so was on the doorstep of the Kanim at 7:30am after a hairy ojek ride from the station. The first person I encountered was an incredibly helpful lady named Yusi. I was all prepared to plea for a quick turnaround so I could perhaps stay overnight and collect my letter without having to return to Yogyakarta. Mbk Yusi simply said that it would be ready by 2pm. When I explained that I would wait in the waiting area because a) I had nowhere else to go and b) I was due to catch a flight at 5:30 she said " In that case we must get this done as soon as possible" and she did. By 12 noon I had the letter in my bag and was flagging down a taxi to the airport. I'd been expecting all kinds of delays, excuses and obstacles placed in my way and all I got were smiles and co-operation. Unbelievable!
Bear in mind that this process not only changes my sponsor, but also extends my present kitas. It's obviously too early to start counting chickens just yet, but things are looking good. A couple more minor glitches at this end with the kanwil but fingers crossed. So far I've made ten trips to the local kanim and five to the kanwil. I'm back on Thursday to collect my letter of permission from the kanwil and take to the kanim, where the lovely Bu Dian has promised that everything will be done and dusted in time.
I'll let you know. Thanks again to all concerned and especially to ReveurGAM who PMd some useful info.
