Title : Blood clot casts shadow over AstraZeneca and J&J vaccine
    By Paul Ricard/Agence France-Presse

[The AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines have come under suspicion of causing very rare but serious blood clots in a handful of cases among the millions vaccinated in the drive to bring the pandemic under control.

Here is what we know about the two vaccines, which are based on the same technology.
...There were 222 cases of these atypical thromboses out of 34 million AstraZeneca injections carried out in the Europe...as of April 4, according to the EMA. And there were 18 deaths, as of March 22. Most of the cases reported were in women under 60 years of age within two weeks of vaccination.

In the US, where more than 6.8 million single-shot J&J vaccine shots have been administered, health authorities on Tuesday recommended that use of the jab be paused while they investigate six reported cases of CVST that also occurred with low levels of blood platelets.
All those cases involved women between the ages of 18 and 48 and one case was fatal, officials said.

...Both of these vaccines -- as well as the Russian Sputnik V jab -- are based on a technique known as "viral vector".
The vaccines use a common-cold causing adenovirus, modified so it can't replicate, as a "vector" to shuttle genetic instructions into human cells, telling them to create a protein of the coronavirus.
This trains the immune system to be ready for the live coronavirus
AstraZeneca opted for a chimpanzee adenovirus, J&J for a human adenovirus.

...The FDA has also said that while in normal circumstances an anticoagulant drug called heparin is used to treat these blood clots, in this case administering heparin may be dangerous.

...Britain has said it will not administer AstraZeneca to the under 30s, while France is not using it on the under 55s...]

"Italy and France resume rollout of AstraZeneca jabs after admitting ban was political as EU ‘sulks’ over Brexit" (16 March 2021, from https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/143570...-covid-resume/)

"EU countries to resume AstraZeneca jabs after 'safe' verdict" (19 March 2021)

    From https://www.thejakartapost.com/life/...e-verdict.html
The Jakarta Post / Agence France-Presse
    By Danny Kemp

[Leading EU countries said Thursday they would resume AstraZeneca vaccinations after the European medical regulator said the jab is "safe and effective" and not associated with a higher blood clot risk after days of commotion around the shot.

The closely-watched announcement from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) came after the WHO and Britain's health watchdog both said the vaccine was safe, adding that it was far riskier to not get the shot as several countries face a worrying rise in coronavirus cases.

After the EMA's announcement a raft of European countries said they would soon resume vaccinations, including Germany, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Lithuania, Latvia, Slovenia and Bulgaria...However Norway and Sweden said they were not ready to resume using the vaccine...

"The committee also concluded that the vaccine is not associated with an increase in the overall risk of thromboembolic events or blood clots," she added.

However, the agency said it "cannot rule out definitively" a link to a rare clotting disorder...]

Title : Germany, France, Italy Suspend Use of AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 Vaccine
By : Jenny Strasburg & Bojan Pancevsky

[Germany, Italy, France and Spain joined the ranks of European countries that have temporarily halted use of the Covid-19 shot made by AstraZeneca ..over blood-clot concerns, dealing another blow to the continent’s sluggish vaccination rollout and threatening the credibility of the vaccine itself.

... last week .. Denmark was the first to suspend the shots. Ireland, Norway, the Netherlands and Iceland have also said they would wait for Europe’s bloc-wide medicines regulator to investigate a small number of serious blood-clotting issues ...

.. the European Medicines Agency, is expected by Thursday to give its verdict on safety and potential risks from a review of the reported cases. The agency ..repeated an advisory from last week that for now it is recommending countries keep using the vaccine, saying the benefits outweigh possible risks...

...the World Health Organization on Monday recommended vaccinations go forward as normal to avoid unnecessary deaths from Covid-19. The WHO is also probing the blood-clotting reports but so far has found no evidence...

AstraZeneca, which developed the vaccine in partnership with the University of Oxford, has said the number of cases of blood clotting among the roughly 17 million people in the EU and U.K. who have received the shot is lower than for the general population...

In a large trial of Johnson & Johnson’s .. vaccine, which was authorized for use in the U.S. in late February, there were slightly more blood clots among vaccine recipients than among those who received a placebo. The Food and Drug Administration said it couldn’t exclude the possibility that the vaccine contributed to the higher number...

The International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis, whose members include medical professionals who treat blood clots, issued a statement Friday recommending that all eligible adults continue to get a Covid-19 vaccine because the small number of reported thrombotic events relative to the millions of vaccinations doesn’t suggest a direct link.]
