  • Help with Car Purchase

    I have an investor kitas and a PT PMA. Looking to purchase a new 7 seater for business and either a Jeep or a older Land Cruiser for personal use. How bad are the taxes on the used vehicle? My residence will be in Jimbaran. Do I need to get an Indonesia driver's license before purchase or to insure the vehicles? I arrive next month and I don't want to go too long without vehicles. Anything else I need to be aware of or concerned about purchasing a new order used vehicle? Thanks.

    (1) I don't know , but if you refer to name transfer/yearly tax , I guess they are not much (not like rich countries that tax a lot old cars due to pollution).

    (2) I don't know , but I guess that it is not necessary for buying but may be necessary for additional non-mandatory private insurance .

    (3) If you never drove a car in Indonesia , I suggest you not to do it without knowing how Indonesians drive (for example , mini-busses and some big ones stop anywhere , so be careful when behind them) . And be informed that in a car accident , the Police will in many cases press the car owner/driver to pay the damages/compensate the weaker/poorer motorcycle driver or pedestrian , no matter who was wrong (usually the car will be kept by the Police until the parts agree) . Probably for this reason cars usually run very slowly in the cities .

    Note :
    ITAS = KITAS = e-ITAS
    From this Forum , members have said that if a foreigner holding a KITAS wants to buy a car using the foreigner's name , he'she needs an Indonesian identity card named SKTT (issued by the city's Government , which is mandatory for KITAS holder to get it but many don't care to get) .
