The reason us poker fans have been quiet in the forum is that gambling is illegal here & should word get out that you are playing for cash in your home the cops will likely call & you will likely go to detention.
A friend of ours got locked up for playing dominoes for money.

    So be careful.

I left my nice poker chips back home ....fearful of the said consequences above.

Missing my poker nights with my buddies...games usually started pretty fun, but it got better as the evening progressed and the wives started swearing more than the husbands

I think getting the chips here is not an issue, but yeah the above looks scary.

Gambling in the West is seen as no big deal (no pun intended). However, it's so serious here that even a group of kids (shoe shiners) at an airport were putting money down on some kind of game and they were all rounded up and put in prison. I think being caught with a poker set would definitely land you in court, even if you were not using it. However, if you just mean an innocent pack of cards then that is a different story. I play poker with my students all the time....but of course without any money or bets made. I wouldn't even use matchsticks to be safe. The cops could say that you intend to cash in the sticks later.

This is way to exaggerated, I'm a local and I own a nice set of poker chips, my friend also has one, and he even bought it in Jakarta. I'm not saying that raid and enforcement doesn't happen, but it is not nearly as stringent as people believe. As long as you keep it discreet, 10 people affair, didn't bother anyone, it should be alright.

It's a different story if you are holding a 5 table private game in your apartment with dealers, free alcohols, strippers and advertise the weekly event openly online without any army or police backing, then yes, you can expect the police to come knocking.

Police will always come to a gambling game if told about it. For Indonesian police, gambling is a very wicked thing. Take the risk if wish to, but don't say we didn't warn you.

Thank you for sharing your experiences. It carries "extra weight" for your argument. All I could add is that the police must be more flexible in some parts of Indonesia. I know in regards to my kitas, that it has always been done through Bali, as the immigration officers are tougher in the areas I've lived in (demanding too much in bribes etc).

                    Hi...Hong and Loli....

Hong is right about police pursuing gambling dens/places/homes where people gambles regularly.
Small bets or big bets, dont matter, the police will pursue gamblers...
If you think you could bribe the police for gambling offense, then good luck trying...
Gambling is not minor traffic violations...

Flying to play in singapore casinos is more fun 😃 and legal.....

                    Best Regards,

I would never gamble with the police. It is a lose/lose proposition. Either they:
                      1. win and walk away with your money
                      2. you bribe them and they walk away with your money, or
                      3. they lose and you don't bribe them and they walk away with your money.

Is anyone else disturbed by the user name: Loli-pedo-fin ? Google it to find out what it stands for.

I am now. Seems not to be the only use of the handle online, either. Stranger than my own handle... but then it isn't always a good idea to make assumptions based on names.

Yes of course they will come if told about it......Gambling = cash = opportunity! But lets be real, who is going to tell them about it? I doubt that OP will post on here "come to our gambling den at xyz address, apt # on xx date at yy time and place your bets!" Even if police came - what, are they going to do, use a battering ram on the apartment door or house gate and raid with machine guns on a 5 person game? Highly doubt it - so if it did (and a big if) happen, would more likely go like this....."Knock knock - who's there? Police. We had a complaint. OK, hold on a minute.....(pssssst, guys put away the chips and cash, cops are here).....yes officer what can I do for you?"

                          Be real.

I also wonder how the cops could make a convincing case that gambling (for real money) was done. If cash was changed for chips there would be nothing to see, just a box holding my personal savings in one room and a bunch of guys playing recreational poker in another. Seems like they would have to show up just as you were changing the chips, come up with a witness or get a recording.

Or... and this is the part I do find a bit worrying, they could just lie and say they found cash on the table. Unless you want to video tape yourself playing (with chips only), I don't see a way around the cops "doing the right thing" (as some of them might see it) and lying for the evidence when they "know" you are guilty. Happens in the States, why not here? But, since we are talking gambling, what are the odds of it happening to you?
