Default Does anyone have any fear of terrorists or being kidnapped?

I don't myself, but I have friends that will not come here under any circumstances whatsoever. I have told a few people that I'm from Argentina. These people knew where I lived though. I think I may say it more often though after watching "Banged up abroad"(my new favorite show..hahaha). I watched an episode today where the guy was in India and was kidnapped. He was a dumb azz though. I would have never got in a car with a stranger..... coming from the Northeast US I never trust anyone I don't know. I've offended more than one Indonesian since I've been here, but that just comes from dealing with con artists and crooks in the US.

Has anyone had any scary experiences that has happened to them here also? Like I said, I'm not all that concerned with it, but I am curious to hear anyone's personal experiences. I have had none myself and usually feel very welcomed wherever I go. I go to a lot of places that have never seen a bule in there establishment also.....I ask.

I think you've got more things to fear here than terrorisim and kidnappings. Try the way people drive on tollways, how long the ambulance will take to get to you and what will happen to you if you haven't got the money/insurance to pay the hospital bill.

So that was you I cut off on the toll road today??? haha. I think I'm as bad as anyone you'll find on the road, but of course I'm an X Formula one driver(not really, but I think I am).

If you don't have the money to pay for your hospital bill here, you're broke. I've been to the hospital here. I think I carry enough money in my pocket to pay for open heart surgery. The hospitals are dirt cheap here....and not that bad in Jakarta area. If I needed any serious surgery I would probably go to Singapore which is also surprisingly cheap compared to the US. I've researched all of this thoroughly.

Like I said. I'm not really worried, although to be honest I think I may be a little more careful with some things I do. Just basically telling anyone that asks I'm an American really. When anyone asks I always ask back where they think I'm from. Everyone always says Australian. The second I open my mouth anyone from Australia would know I'm an American, but they don't.

ps. Did I already tell that story? hahaha

Yes, I live on mortal fear everyday, in fact sometimes I cannot even get out of bed for fear, that's the reason I missed last two expat functions, fear of terrorists.

If you compare the number of people killed or injured per unit time in Indonesia with those who are victims of traffic accidents, air and sea disasters, food poisoning, moonshine liquor, nasty diseases etc then it puts things in perspective.

You got that right Man. A couple of years ago when riding the motorbike into a petrol station I hit a patch of gravel and the bike fell over dislocating my shoulder. The wife was with me but not hurt. She called for an ambulance which took me to the nearest hospital. Once there, they called in a doctor, a couple of nurses and the anesthesist. They fixed the arm and kept me overnight in a private room and the total bill was less than $100. Meanwhile, a few years ago in the US I went into hospital for some heart checks. They kept me overnight and gave me bill for $6,000! But to get back to the point, I have never experienced any fear here but several friends who I have invited to visit from the UK are too scared to come here, due to the media. Those who do, love it here.

Few years back I was working in Bangladesh, about 10 in the morning frantic phone calls, some 450 bombs had gone off all over the country, neither me or the wife hurt. Was pulled out of Bangladesh, and a short while later at a meeting in Bali. Decided to take the wife along and extend for the weekend. Had been to the seafood on the beach the night before and asked if the wife would like to go again, she said yes but lets make it the following night, guess what we missed the second bali bombing because of it.
A little while later I am in Delhi again with the wife, we spent Saturday exploring the markets. No sooner were we back at the hotel, the concierge rushes up to us and asks do we still have all ours arms and legs, for the 3rd time in nearly as many months bombs had gone off we missed them by 30 minutes. Bad news comes in 3's as they say in English.
Still if you think that strange or lucky the wife knows a japanese couple who were actually in the marriott when both bombs went off years between them, and are still alive ( though the husband partly deaf ) to tell the tale, now that is lucky
As a stranger give it welcome.
