Dr. Jism? Isn't that the name of a physician in a bad porn flick?
I didn't think 'Dr. Jism' (remember that panacaea for all ills?) could be beaten for sheer quackery, but a 'scientist' from Bandung has gone one better claiming that her 'nanotechnology' cigarette filters transform tobacco smoke into a curative agent that detoxifies the body and cures cancer. Full story at http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2...at-cancer.html
Even more astonishing was the Jak Post devoting a huge amount of space to her claims. As per usual she doesn't consider it necessary for peer review of her work and goes on to claim that any international criticism of her 'science' is because those nasty foreign scientists don't respect Indonesian research.
It is perhaps telling that it took her 13 years to do her PhD. Even after all that study she still believes that smoke can enter the body through skin pores (shades of masuk angin here) and draw out toxins like mercury - like we all have mercuric poisoning.
Anywhere else she would be locked up for her own safety.

Yes, I had almost forgotten about that article, on the front page of the Features section, no less. The smoking is beneficial, sucks the mercury out, the treatments, tin foil -- it was just so outlandish. The Post must have a dukun editing that section of the paper. Make me wonder if the story was a sponsored piece. In any case, my view of the Post is certainly diminished. Fortunately, there is another English language newspaper now available in Jakarta.
gffgold, It must be wonderful to know all the answers. I have done this treatment and for me it certainly made a huge difference to my health. I was diagnosed with inoperable liver cancer in August 2008 and given about 6 to 8 months to live. After doing balur for 21 months, my lesions have drastically reduced. I have had regular blood tests and 4 ct scans to monitor my results. During the last 21 months I have not had any debilitating side affects and I'm so grateful to be able to enjoy life. You can take it or leave it, but I'm so thankful for this treatment.

I don't think treatment with amino acids would fall under this category. Do the research.
Here's another possibility beyond the placebo effect:
If your original diagnosis was obtained in Indonesia, the more likely reason for your miraculous recovery would be that there was nothing wrong with you in the first place. Anecdotal stories and testimonials are a quack's bread and butter, but prove little.
Very true. I think misdiagnosis accounts for more 'miracles' than any other factor.
Miracle cures make for news stories, especially at quiet times. Much less publicity accrues to those who went to Lourdes, tried Dr Jism or bathed in 'divine' smoke (often at considerable expense) then died quietly of their original ailment.
What prejudice! So you think it is likely that people who are diagnosed in Indonesia are probably misdiagnosed? I have met a lot of people here who were diagnosed overseas and followed treatment overseas and yet found the treatment they had here much more successful.
