After being here for almost a year i am still having trouble to communicate with the locals. i had one such incident with the guy who rents part of the house i am staying at. He is a bird lover. He loves his birds so much that he has 5 pet birds that he takes out every day to pamper in the morning sun, clean out their cages and allows them to bath in a special cage near to the fish pond while preparing their breakfast.
The problem is this. My wife who is also my bahasa indo teacher told me that the word "burung" means penis. So when i went toward the fishpond to feed the fish, the guys bird who was taking a bath started panicing and hurting itself to try get away (that i didnt even notice), so him being a crazy bird lover who worries so much about his pets jumps up and runs towards me shouting " kamu membuat burungku takut". Well naturally i took that as an insult and was preparing for an argument, but my wife quickly translated what he said and thats when i looked down and saw the terrified winged creature half breaking its wings in an attempt to get away from me.

On first arrival I spent a fraught few minutes searching for a carrot (wortel) rather than a telephone service (wartel) which amused some locals. I also called a tailor (penjahit) a criminal (penjahat).

Better noisy birds (I think) .. than the monkey that lived next door to my house in Yogyakarta in the 70s

Man could that thing make noise .. and the whole neighborhood knew when it was happy / unhappy / lonely / sad / irritated .. whatever it was that was making it cry out !

Very funny. Your wife is of course correct but she is using slang for penis :-)

According to my Kamus, Burung is the root word for Bird however it is also stated to refer to the penis of Young boys, whether it is indeed slang that has made it into the Kamus I can't say...you wife Beebop, is being nakkal with you ...
