thank goodness, I was worried about a 12 month pregnancy...
You didn't strike me as the type to be overly concerned about giving birth KW. Are you expecting?
This hypnoberthing is new to me.
I'm interested in new techniques and have even read about autoberthing using auto-assymetry and thrusters...but using hypnotics is new.
I've also heard of Hynautics, in fact I have those. This is where the use of hydraulic power is used to facilitate the steering and therefore use less force.
I always instruct my wife, when I allow her to be in control, to labour to port, when berthing. To you landlubbers that means to the left...as if you didn't know!
She favours starboard but I've allowed that because she is right-handed and the female brain works opposite to normal...right guys!
Anyways...when berthing...one MUST be absolutely in control...no amount of wind must be permitted to distract. No amount of applause from the audience should shift one's focus and...when berthed.. it is customary to thank the crew!
Happy sailing
David
S%+x This post is about giving birth...not berthing boats...sorry he!he!

Hmm. From my experience of hypnobirthing (going to classes with a first time pregnant friend and then assisting her in labour) it was a repackaged version of techniques that were around decades ago (Dick-Read, Meares etc), with added hype.
I'd used meditation and active strategies to have a very quick birth myself... as had the other birth assistant. However my friend took the advice of the trainer to not listen to anyone else's 'horror stories' which she said would create fear and interfere with the lovely peaceful etc. So although she wanted us to support her, she refused in learn anything from either of us as she believed she wouldn't need to know more than she could pick up and apply in a few hours, without having any background in meditative discipline. My friend was all very calm and nonchalent beforehand, but turned out to be seriously unprepared and overwhelmed by the actual experience. It turned out to be the longest and most harrowing of the 5 or so births I've been involved with.
Of course, what seems to happen in a lot of these sorts of systems is that any lack 'success' just gets blamed on the birthing woman who 'couldn't relax enough' or her inadequate assistants. So my tuppence worth on this system is sure, go along, there's some interesting techniques in there but ...

Thanks for the debunking, Newgate. New this or that with modern techy multisyllabic, multi-word titles strike me as little more than repackaging and hype. As is the case for lot of "new" branded products, what you are paying extra for is the packaging.
Hi Newgabe,
I totally know where you are coming from. When I was first introduced to HypnoBirthing years ago, it was from a client attempting a vaginal-birth-after-a-cesarean(vbac) and she found a Hyponotherapist who taught it only to 3 ppl since she got accredited. I was skeptical. To add, the birth ended in another cesarean.
However, one of my team mates got intrigued, did some research and invited Marie Morgan, the founder of Hypnobirthing to Singapore to train us. After the course, i was WOWed but still skeptical. Then I attended my first birth of a first time mother. 3 hours from start till end and after being a doula with many women, i have not seen someone birth so comfortably. 250 births later (more than 80% drug free)... I am convinced, it is no longer a coincidence. Of course not all the births are easy, short, relaxed and comfortable. of course the main focus is not just an easy, short, relaxed and comfortable birth. It really depends on what the clients want out of it. I used to teach BOTH active birth antenatal classes and hypnobirthing classes but the results from the hypnobirthing classes were astounding that i no longer had a demand for active birthing. Whether the mother had a cesarean, an epidural or a drug free birth, they were able to walk away feeling empowered, using the tools to help them as much as possible through the process. There is so much more to it than what it is perceived as.
Recently another vbac mother who just finished a series of lessons with me said: "In my previous childbirth education class, it felt like i was someone looking at the candy from the outside. The candy is there but not accessible to me. With your classes, i feel that the candy is within my reach."
If you are open to it, i would love to talk to you more about it. I'll be in Jakarta in March and in Bali in April, would be great to meet up or Skype.
Cheers, Ginny
