    'Police Honored for Killing Kwalik

A team of 50 police officers on Wednesday received special commendations from the National Police headquarters for shooting and killing Kelly Kwalik, the charismatic leader of an armed faction of the pro-independence Free Papua Movement, in December.

“All police members involved in this operation will receive priority attention in regard to promotion,” National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Edward Aritonang said.

One of the team members, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they were now tracking down Goliath Tabuni, a more senior member of the rebel group, also known as the OPM.

The police claim that Kwalik was involved in series of attacks in Papua, including a deadly 2002 ambush of a convoy of buses near the huge gold and copper mining operation of the Indonesian subsidiary of Freeport McMoRan.'
    JKT Globe today...

Something stinks here, the guy was reported in one media outlet as being shot in the leg and mysteriously dying later in Hospital...whether or not he was guilty as alleged, was he not entitled to a fair trial, and what are the future ramifications for other suspects if this mob are going to be rewarded and fast tracked for promotion...

Slightly misleading. Pretty much everyone agrees he was involved. His coffin was draped in their flag and I have found photos of him toting automatic weapons as well as several non Indonesian sites confirming his status as leader of an armed movement.
To say "the police claim" puts a spin on the story.

Leaving aside the politics for the moment.

How can you possibly leave Politics aside Fred, it was all about politics! but I guess if everyone agrees, well it's ok to just murder him then, and reward the Killers, isn't it... mate, sometimes you should actually think about what you write... honestly.

The point was not about politics or the rights and wrongs of the situation in that area.
The only point is, if you live by the sword you don't expect a bunch of flowers from the guys you shoot at.

Maybe he was murdered by the police but he also murdered so it's not exactly a heart stopping moment to hear he was killed.

It's not like he was a school lollypop man helping kids cross the road.

Completely agree, it is 100% politics.

Yes he murdered probably a few guys while thousands and thousands of his own were killed.

Lets be straight. The situation out there looks rough with murders committed on both sides and both sides engaging in a propaganda war.

I'm not suggesting he was or was not murdered. I'm not making any comment about the rights and wrongs of the miming companies, Indonesian government/occupation forces or the terrorist/freedom fighters.

All I'm saying is that I'm not likely to end up in the local RSU with a suspected heart attack on hearing he was killed in whatever way or the cops that got him are being honoured by the government.

Yes, let's be straight. Its all about the money -- a few powerful Javanese in Papua to exploit the natural riches of the region, hired the military to slap down any of the locals who make a stink.

Did I argue on that subject?

Things like this are usually down to the cash.

I think, as well, that there is a difference between the guy on the ground with a boot on his neck and the guy wearing the boot.
