They don't care. Many are probably slobs at home. If you don't want to see that I suggest you move because there isn't anything you can do about it. I first went to Bali 21 years ago. That aspect of it wasn't different then from today.
As a newbie expat, I am struck by the behaviour of some (and I stress some) short-time visitors to this beautiful island. I ended up so annoyed and embarrassed at the carryings-on of certain cultural buffoons over the last 2 weeks that my latest blog post turned out to be a rant - and it's normally a light-hearted look at the tribulations of a wet-behind-the-ears expat ...
The full rant is at http://tinyurl.com/mhewuk
Am I being over-sensitive? Does anyone else feel the same when confronted with disrepectful behaviour towards the locals here?

Hi there,
Welcome to the forum
I just wanted to thank you for the good time I had reading one of your post in another forum regarding the buying of a motorbike in Bali.

I'll echo that welcome. I really enjoyed the motorbike post and loved the rant as well.
Can't say I've been to Bali but I suspect it's not going to be a million miles (In style at least) from Phuket, Thailand, where a bunch of blokes get smashed and assume that any local lass is available for a shag at one price or another.
What are you doing on the island, work or pleasure?
Let me guess, you witnessed all of that in Sanur, or in the Kuta/Legian/Seminyak strip.
Welcome to the Forum.
I never went to Bali as of yet. But the behavior that You did observed happens all over the world.
I was embarrassed once, while I was in Peru to see Machu Picchu.
Tourist Commenting in English about "funny" locals.
I was praying that nobody understands them.
And that happened in the place where, there once was one of the greatest civilizations.
P.S.
tinyurl is the great sid workhorse, and they are hated for that. I love them.
Yep - all of that was in the strip. Living in Legian till March, so I'll guess there will be a lot more of the same to see. It's perhaps not as widespread as I implied (I exaggerate for effect) but it's visible enough to be distasteful. My retirement KITAS status and my tendency to a life of sloth gives me lots of time to observe ...
I have no doubt that what you saw and described in your article is true. I also think that outside "the strip" such uncouth and undignified behaviour is not common. You should consider living in other parts of Bali that attract a different, much different slice of foreigners.
Luckily, it's temporary. Once the current lease expires I'm moving to the Umalas/Petiteget area.
