Thread: Marriage Registration

    Question Marriage Registration

We where recently married is Australia and my wife immediately traveled back to Indonesia where we live and I went to work. We are in the process of registering our marriage with the Indonesian Embassy; however the priest that married us took her time in registering the marriage with the Births, Deaths & Marriages office. My Mum s doing the leg work for us, she is an old woman and nothing happens quickly, and she is yet to apply for the “Certificate of Marriage” and in any case it takes 5 business days to have certificate issued, plus postage time. After that we will need to send all of the relevant documentation to the Indonesian Embassy which will take more time, hence as I understand it we will be out of time.

We considered getting married again in Indonesia; however the Indonesian Government requires a “Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage” issued by the Australian Embassy in Jakarta, who are unlikely to issue it as we already married in Australia.

I see on this forum that you need to register the marriage within 30 days of the marriage, which is unfeasible. So what are my options to legalise the marriage in Indonesia, I don’t mind paying a fine if that’s what it takes, but I don’t want to pay any “additional fees” , so what does the law state and does anyone have any advice?

Atlantis, as you seem to be the best informed of all issues and give great advice, would you have any suggestions for me?

    Thanks in Advance
    This will do me...

    Hi thisldome,

My husband and I also married in Australia and then we registered our marriage to Suku Dinas Catatan Sipil in Grogol, Jakarta when we came back to Jakarta.

Basically, your wife has to registered the marriage within 30 days once she comes back to Jakarta. You don't have to submit the real Certificate from the Births, Deaths & Marriages office but you can use a copy of the certificate the marriage celebrant gave you on your wedding day.

There are lots of documentation that needs to be submitted such as a copy of the certificate from your wedding celebrant, your birth certificate and passport (as far as I can remember it needs to be translated), your wife copy of KTP, a copy of KK, a copy of her birth certificate and passport. For further information, I think it would be best if your wife or someone from the family comes to the
Suku Dinas Catatan Sipil in Grogol for the details. There's no need to pay any fees.

    Hope it helps.

    Cheers,

    Thanks for the info

My father in law went to the local office, we don’t live in Jakarta, and was told they him the following:

Need the births, deaths and marriage cert that has been attested by foreign affairs in Australia then sent it to the Indonesian Embassy in Australia with the appropriate form who will give you another piece of paper...its this piece of paper they need to register the marriage in Indonesia.

Regardless we are now months over due, I am sure there is a way around it and my father in law will sort it.

    Thanks

As an American, recently married to an Indonesian, I'm trying to find out the fees involved for registering the marriage (Christian) at catatan sipil. We are in Medan, and getting conflicting information on the actual costs involved. Can anyone advise? thank you

There is a heap of info in the forum about various experiences and different stories.

What we have been told from the catatan sipil is that we need the cert to be attested at our foreign affairs office, then it needs to go to a notaries, then needs to be signed by the police…this very different to what other people have been told, the cost for the catatan sipil is 1 million. Let your wife do the leg work but arm yourself with as much info as you can, if questioned be polite but stern so they know that you know what you are talking about.

We where married overseas, depending on where you where married there maybe different requirements, but do a search on the forum.

Lots of info on this issue at the beginning of this article ... http://www.expat.or.id/info/mixmarriages.html though I must admit we haven't tracked down any official fee yet

I ended up paying IDR 1.3M for the registration, here in Medan. Was told they would rush the registration through, in time for my departure back to US (2 weeks after registering). Not sure if this raised the price in my case, since as the previous poster mentioned, I have not been able to ascertain any info about official fees. Also, our marriage took place almost 5 months ago, and there was no mention of the requirement to register within 30 days.

I'm not sure about official fees either but I million is the maximum fine for late registration, and yes the Law was changed from one year to 30 days after your return to Indonesia.

1.2 mill?!?!?! Oh well, at least everything is sorted out now, isn't it? My suggestion to other couples who will need this in the future, let you indonesian spouse go to the related office and do all the work without you coming along. It makes one hell of a difference. I'm the indo wife and I chose to do this myself without husband (one of the reasons is that he's the typical bule who just don't have the patience to deal with government officials) and wow, did things work out really easily. I only need to go to the Dinas Kependudukan dan Catatan Sipil DKI Jakarta, bring some obvious papers (marriage certificate, passport, ktp, etc. the usual stuff) and paid 200k (back in 2007). I wasn't late though, mind you. But even if you're late, the indo wife could probably negotiate the fee to a more reasonable price with sympathy-seeking attitude and alot of smile (worth a try anyway). Hey, it works all the time with the traffic police! (oops, i probably shouldn't say that, should i?)

Liamm_1, can you please let me know what documents the Catatan Sipil in Medan require in order to have your marriage registered? Thanks.
