Default My legs used to be my pride...

There was a time when I had legs of steel. I ran, biked, climbed mountains with a heavy backpack, and the legs just kept on ticking. Until last year, that is. In the last nine months I overextended my right knee on an attemp to climb gunung Sumbing and then injured it again with weights doing the squat. I know that I need to rest it and give it time to heal. Nevertheless, are there any foods, vitamins or minerals that speed up the regeneration of ligaments and cartilage?

These two products below are commonly used to treat Osteoarthritis and are also reputed to assist with regeneration, I knew a Doctor once who swore by them.

    'Glucosamine
is one of several 6-carbon amino sugars found in the body and is a building block for glycosaminoglycans. The exact mechanism of action of glucosamine, other than enhancing the natural cartilage repair process, is unknown.
Chondroitin is a molecule that occurs naturally in the body. It is a major component of cartilage -- the tough, connective tissue that cushions the joints.'

    'Chondroitin
helps to keep cartilage healthy by absorbing fluid (particularly water) into the connective tissue. It may also block enzymes that break down cartilage, and it provides the building blocks for the body to produce new cartilage.'

They are often sold as a compliment to each other or can be taken alone of course, do a Google search on them for more detailed information.

    Good luck hombre ...

    Default Horsetail

I broke my leg in a motorcycle/pickup accident. The bike hit the pickup sideways, dropped on its side then stuck in muck and I kept going through murky water in a ditch. A day or so later my friend received a health magazine he subscribed too and on the cover was showing the main story about horsetail. Its great for nails, hair and bones. I drank horsetail tea four to eight times a day for almost a year. After finaly getting rid of the infection the Doctor was blown away at just how fast my bones strengthened.

Horsetail is high in silicon and that is the ingredient that helps with what I mentioned above. I don't know if it is relevant to cartilage but I highly recomend you investigate it to find out. Btw if you find it is thought to be good for it, you might want to start out mixing a little honey with it and dont make it too strong. After a while I made it fairly strong and really enjoyed it without a sweetner.

I have a little issue with one of my knees and empathise with you. Cheers to full recovery in the not too distant future.

Sorry Pimpin but that sounds like a lot of horses**t to me...
I suspect you have a good constitution and recover from injuries well rather than the horsehair or Silicon being responsible.
In any event I'm positive the market would be flooded with horsehair and or Silicon products if there was any evidence of it being therapeutically effective.

I am afraid I am erring on the side of cynicism as well.............we all heal at different rates depending on our genes and lifestyle. Not sure if you mean you drank it for a year before infection and bones healed? If so thats actually a LONG time....
But I do also believe if something gives you confidence in your mind then that is beneficial as believing you are healing is akin to healing itself!!!

Still the silicon ingredient perked my interest. I could do with a bit of that here and there
If you could have one super power what would it be?

Om, is the belief and minor efficacy of quack medicine, the Placebo Effect, analogous to the belief in the power and intervention of supernatural deities? As a trained medical practitioner, do you recommend piety, scriptural orthodoxy and prayer as a therapeutic recipe?

No worries there, I have no intention - it was just a wee bit of waffle. Quite amply happy thanks!!!
Yes the Placebo effect................ thought it better not to use it as did not want another "obnubilating" brouhaha.

Eat a diet rich in Protein (amino acids).
"Protein is the building block of all life and is essential for the growth of cells and tissue repair. All proteins are made up of different combinations of 20 compounds called amino acids. Depending on which amino acids link together, protein molecules form enzymes, hormones, muscles, organs and many other tissues in the body."

    All meats are protein packed or if you are vegeterian;

    legumes (peas, green beans)
    cereals
    beans
    pulses
    grains
    nuts
    seeds
    soya products

You probably knew all this already. Anyway speedy recovery - avoid squats!! Take to the water for slow rehabilitation. Gentle kicking and swimming in the water will provide a low impact work out.
If you could have one super power what would it be?
