The reason for this is the old oil is being phased out and the government didn't want people left without the means to cook.

If you live in Jakarta, there are many events you can attend. For a start get the What's On Jakarta's monthly magazine to see all the activities/events.
They have the two International Auction Houses such as Christie's and Sotheby's also and through these events you can get to meet the local artists or see their exhibitions or books they publish. Hope this would give you some kind of tip on what to do when in Jkt.
