PM character limit = 100?!?!

Trying to respond to a simple PM right now and being told that charater limit is 100 so please reduce the size!

100 charaters is WAY to low to write any kind of decent message.

we reduced it as an anti-spamming measure .. have increased it to 250 characters

I'm unsure that will stop them but I suppose it's a case of suck it and see.

250 characters is pretty low, just wrote a quick three line message to answer a query and say a quick hello and hit 312 characters.
I dont see how character limits affect spamming?

No expert but I can see how character limit will deter spammers surely for obvious reasons - they can do little more than send links and short messeage ie advertising will be restricted etc.
I guess PM is just for exchanging email datails to take contact further and very short quick replies. Correct me if I am wrong - why don't you just email Tim?

Email is far less convenient than private messaging for private discussions with other members of a forum

I do not agree on PM character limitation.

I do not think that it would detter any spammer using the PM system. What they want is us to click on the link. That's it. And they will need only one sentence including a link to do so, meaning less than 100 or 250 words, including their link. Spamming via the PM system has occured, that's a fact, but I had roughly 10 reports in about a year, I think and I believe we acted quickly to get rid of the spammers. Limitating PMs penalises users not spammers. Exchanging emails is possible, as per RD's post, but then it means that you have to log out from here, log in to your email, log out from it and back to log in here. It sucks. I believe that we could avoid it and I'll inform the admins about it.

On top of that, quite a few users have PMed me questions which were too personal to be posted. With 250 character, they won't be able to PM me (or anyone else) anymore and won't have any answer to a problem they have. And this is really sad.

Some people are afraid or shy to post, but still need and deserve to be helped.

I use the PM system quite a lot but now find it a real pain.
Very short message space is bad news as you have to send the thing over several messages. Then you have to wait 300 seconds before you can send the next part.
That means a minimum of 10 minutes, and maybe longer, to post a simple message.

Nice try but not a great idea.
