I am gonna make it worse: When I was in my early 20's, meaning about 15 years ago I started to collect french wine, buying a few Bordeaux first growth, Bordeaux Saint Emilion and Graves, Bourgogne "Grand Cru" and "Premier Cru" and some very fine Alsace (quite a few "Vendanges tardives"). They are all from year 1989 to 1999. I put them in a very fine cellar, letting them maturing untill about 2 years ago. I am now in the process to drink them and some are absolutely wonderful. They would make anyon believe in god (Bacchus, at least). For tomorrow, I am still hesitating in between a Corton Rognet "Grand Cru" 1998 that should start to be close from its top or a more modest, Chateau Colombier Monpelou (Pauillac) 1996...
    I know, I am mean...

Sorry for the blattant off topic.

Once again I also sincerely apologise for going off the thread but when it is prompted by a Moderator .... What do I do?

Just the Bordeaux Saint Emilion, is surely enough to make me jealous, especially when he has "laid it down" in his cellar.
I once had the same wine fom the same years but being a Brit laid it down my throat not in a good cellar

The last Red Bordeaux I managed to get here was labeled "Claret".

Sorry Antantis, but sincerely, not only in jest but jealousy, I have to admit.

Vintage Saint Emilion ... I had to take your bait. Sorry

Don't worry about the off topic Davey. I have cleaned the thread from our posts and move them in a thread of its own. Wine deserve it and should not be spoiled by posts related to visas and documents. It does not marry well.

I rarely drink wine in Indonesia. Weather and food don't really match with a good bottle of wine, I believe... However, when I am in Europe this is another matter and I have more bottles in my cellar than I could drink, even in a few years. They will still have a lot of time to mature.

Actually, more I live away from France and more I take the opportunity to try non European wines and more I am impressed by wines from Chili, I suppose I will have to visit this country one day !

Back in France, I have a couple of hundred bottles & magnums (specially from Burgundy such as Clos Vougeot, Hospices de Beaune..) from the 70's but it is really difficult to know how they will taste before to open the bottle so we just drink them among the family ! If it is good, I then realise that I have just spent a few hundred Euros (and I do not like that) and if is bad, I blame myself to have waited for too long. Consequently, I rarely open a bottle and I will let my children deal with this dilemma in 20 or 30 years !

On the opposite to wines from Chili, I must say that I gave up on Australian wines as I have never been able to find one suitable to my taste...
The main problem about wines in Indonesia is that there are only sold in a few places and it is rather expensive, even at Changi airport I find wines far from being cheap but I allow myself a small indulgence when I run into a bottle of Champagne.
A small tip : I know that we are only allow to bring 1 bottle at Soekarno airport but I always take 2 and never had any problem.

This is one of the drawbacks when my Italian husband and I (Indonesian) move to Jakarta. We're going to miss wine very much. When living in Seoul, S. Korea; wines from all parts of the world were availabe at reasonable price so we really enjoyed that but then the food was not to our liking. Nothing is perfect, is there?

My sister in law being chilean, I had the opportunity to taste some very respectable wine and have visited quite a few properties producing wine in Chile. I was often astonished by the quality of some of their wines and have to admit that I even bought some. They have a lot character.

It sounds like a music to my ears. I also tend to favor Burgundy wine rather than Bordeaux. Globally, you have real good quality among wines of this region while in Bordeaux you have extremely good wine... and extremly overpriced one with very average quality.
Bâtard Montrachet, Bonnes Mares, Romanée Conti, Corton Charlemagne, La Tâche, Corton Rognet, ...etc, all of these appelation have produced some wonderful Grand Cru which are often superior, IMHO to many first growth Bordeaux..

There may well have exceptions, but I often find them "easy" to drink but they don't really have a character, a personality.

During our Bahasa Indonesia Course just concluded I befriended a Frenchman.
On Saturday the class celebrated our graduation where copious amounts of wine was drunk.
My French friend had previously confided that he usually went to sleep after a couple of glasses. On Saturday, he already had around five glasses and was in very 'high' spirits when, in his infectious French accent, he asked, "Dahveed, what kind of wine is this?"
    I replied "Merah".
He looked quizically and responded "Oh! good...becoz [sic] I no likeing Shiraz"
Our Guru was standing next to him and rolled her eyes...perhaps regretting giving him such a high final exam mark.

Another classmate was a very young Filipino student. At the party my Indonesian wife engaged him in conversation and inquired, "Where do you live?"
    He replied "Tebet".
My wife said "Oh! Tibet...that's very far to come to Indonesia. Have you ever met the Dalai Lama?"

Wine, wine, wine....surely a gift from the Gods; or a joke!

    recovering from hangover... David

ps. for those that do not know....Merah means Red, Tebet is an area in S. Jakarta and Guru is Teacher.

    Thanks for the laugh, David.
Both stories, involving the french & philippino guys were hilarious to me. I really like the "tebet vs Tibet" one.
When dinking wine, better to keep quiet and enjoy...
