Default tesol level requirements for indo immigration

    g'day all.

im an aussie married for 9 years to an indonesian lady. we have 3 kids and would like for them to experience their indonesian heritage/culture for a year or two while they are still young and it wont effect their schooling.

the children would learn the indonesian language, go to a native school, and interact with their relatives. there are other activities available to them also that are attractive..ie; music lessons, martial arts, etc.

the plan is that i get a job teaching english. i have taught english before in china in 2001. however, i had, and have no qualifications. the requirements to my knowledge are that i complete a tesol course. a search yesterday shows there are a few levels of tesol.

my question is; what level of tesol do i need complete, for indonesian immigration to be happpy that i work as a teacher there? 'foundation' level, or 'certificate 3' ?

also, as my wife is an indonesian national, should i apply for a spouse visa with work rights? or a simple work visa?

thanks in advance for your help.

i just rang the indonesian consulate in sydney....the lady said basically she didnt know which course suits indo immigration, and that the school sponsoring me would know...??!!

however. i need to choose a course. i know it must be an tesol course. there are 3 levels (to my knowledge). the first is a 'foundation' level, and the second and 3rd are 'certificate 3 and 4' ...

there is a price difference in the courses. about 25% difference. now as im not looking at this as a career, just a stop gap plan for 18 months or so, id rather do the shorted, less expensive course....

so does anyone know if the 'foundation' level tesol course will suffice?

here is some correspondence i recieved via email relating to the same topic...

Language schools here are pretty flexible - (in fact there are a lot of schools in Jakarta that take on native speakers with no qualification at all) but I recommend getting a reputable qualification as the training they provide really does come in handy in the classroom.

Different schools have different preferences but the foundation level TESOL certificate you described sounds perfectly adequate for an entry level teaching job in a language school like EF, TBI, etc...

There used to be some restrictions about foreign nationals attending local schools so it might be worth checking that out in advance.
would anyone here like to add? 37 views, no replies. surely there is ONE person with a clue?

Good luck finding that spouse visa with the right to work, let us know how you go...
Your wife can sponsor you for a Temporary Resident Kitas but this has no 'work rights'!
You cannot apply for a 'work visa' either so you will need to have an employer sponsor you who will usually then orginise your working Visa.

I have never heard of Indonesia requiring teachers to have a TESOL qualification. Most people try to get a qualification in their home country before they go to Asia to increase their chances of employment. You could well spend several months wages (in Indonesia) on a course that might not be necessary.

You already have taught in China so that should be enough to get a job. Salaries aren't high though. So if you are used to living it up in Australia, you might need a bit of an adjustment to your lifestyle.

Also is you have any debts like a mortgage you need to cover back home, you will need to think about this.

You don't need a lot to live here, so if you have some savings you might find it better just to take a year off and spend the time with your wife and kids.

I believe the CELTA/Trinity are the only ESL courses that are worth doing. The certificates you can get online are a bit of a scam.

I am not a teacher nor have I ever applied for a working visa here, so I can't say really whether you need a cert or not.

Hi prodigal, AFAIK if you are planning on working in indonesia as a teacher, you will need a sponsor letter from an English school hiring you. Which might, or might not, require you to show some sort of qualification.

Immigration will not be interested in qualifications of you do not have a sponsor.
