Default newbie: US. to Indo calling services

First, thought I'd introduce myself....new to this forum who
is interested in making either Bali or Jakarta my retirement home
    as an American Expat.

Second, I'm looking around for long-distance services(names of specific companies that offer phone cards, calling plans, 10-10 services etc.) so that I can call a friend of mine in Jakarta from here in the U.S.

This may be critical, but I would be calling her mobile from my home phone(non-cell and non-mobile).

So in effect, I'm asking around for recommendations of names of long-distance services that offer good service for an economical or decent price!

I don't know that , but if you call from your computer , check www.12voip.com : it will cost only 0.03 Euros per minute to call to a cellphone in Indonesia (the same to send a sms) , or 0.035 Euros/min to call to a landline phone (I can't tell about the quality) . I use www.justvoip.com to call Brazil and USA from Indonesia , and the quality is good .

    Hey Marcus!
Thanks for the referal...I also found another site, at http://www.nobelcom.com,
that was recommended by the retirement magazine "Kiplingers". It only costs 4.0 Ct/Minute. It's good to have two sites...in case one does not deliver good service, I can fall back on the second one.

If you are using a computer, just use skype.

    Unhappy

Just wonder is there anyone here in Indo using skype to call UK vice versa? My ibu doesn't use computer so I have to ring her land line through skype recently as the price is so cheap but the connection was so bad she could hardly hear me, I can hear her very loud and clear. I thought (after years paying £1 per minute) the tariff was too good to be true (5p per minute!) and perhaps it is. My mum is in Banten but when I tried to ring my niece in jakarta it was the same she can't hear me either . While my brother in Utah willy nilly ringing family all the time in Jakarta with skype and no problem at all, I am raging with jealous here in the UK.

Bandwidth is critical using skype. There shouldn't be any problem when BOTH ends of the connection are broadband (high speed). I use skype to skype all the time to communicate back home when I'm away; likewise, we communicate skype to mobil or land line when calling the in-laws in Cibubur and never had any trouble. Only problem is when trying to establish a connection with the other end on a so-so internet connection during high traffic hours.

Thanks redsnapr. I don't think my mum's phone is broadband but my niece in Cileungsi probably is and also my sister in Jaktim (a lot closer to jakarta) but both when I tried on their landline just the same. I haven't tried skype to mobile yet though maybe next weekend. When I use skype to skype with family back home the delay was sooo long sometimes we've clashes in our conversation and I am losing patience.
    Thanks for your reply.

Bandwidth is critical to any VOIP service , like skype . In your case it applies to your computer connection . There may be too much traffic at the time you call and/or your connection has some restriction , like in ADSL connection where the speed of data is lower when going out of your computer than coming in . Other possible problems : the audio volume setting , and microphone sensitivity , in your computer .

Marcus, thanks for that. I must say my connection is really good even when it says signal : low Speed : 24.0Mbps. Never have any problem with slow connection or getting cut off, and when I run my business on internet which I have to download and upload a lot of pictures it's always very fast. Another thing, is it better to have separate microphone and camera or built in one? I have been using my son's laptop because his has built in camera while mine is a bit older laptop I have to connect/set up the camera etc.
