I heard that they put the live animal in a sack and beat it. Apparently the bruising of the live animal tenderises the meat. Not so much about humane anything Hombre- just that I could never want to eat something that has had the shit beaten out of it first. I am not big on creating unnecessary suffering.

I concur with Hombre. In Indonesia (as in many other places in the world) the notion of "somewhat brutal" makes little sense. Any slaughtering of animals that I've witnessed here, from chicken to pigs, from cow to goat were conducted in a somewhat unfriendly manner.

A cat would fit in a sack. Good luck to put a dog in it. Dogs have this ability to sense that something not good is gonna happen to them. Most of the killings that I've witnessed in Sulut were fast... and with no sack. In fact I can't recall having seen a sack being used for anything else than transporting the meat of the dead animal.

In Timor I came across a pooch wrapped in coconut leaves, with the legs and head sticking out from orifices, hung and dangling from the side rack of a speeding bus headed for the hills inland. It don't think it was someone's pet. Poor little guy.

It was the clobbering in a sack info that put me off totally... however if that is not the method used then I would have to have a rethink (just told the pups to cover their ears as Momma baddie talks about these matters- I do not want them traumatised).

    I can understand it.
In the same idea, many of us would not be able to eat a pet that we've raised, it's why it's not uncommon to trade dogs. "I give you my dog for your acara and you will give me yours for my acara" type of trading. When my 60 kilos+ male rottie passed away it has been a very tough time for me to accept that some of our staff would eat him. But none of them would have understood that I waste 60 kilos of meat by burrying him. I didn't want to know who took him home.

I just visited my Lab (the one I left behind here in the UK) he was a lean mean working dog when I left- now he would feed half of Manado. He has gained about 20 kg in 1 year.

And yep Atlantis... I sort of try to "get" the pragmatism of my friends and family here in Indonesia... but I doubt I will be nipping round the neighbours to carry off their dead pets so that I can rustle up a fancy dinner...

oooooooh, I just realised why my hubby looked at me strange when I flushed my poor dead James the Fish down the toilet last week... he was probably thinking it was a wasted snack :O

Getting back on track to the topic of pork, just tried a new restaurant in Kemang, Spanky's Ribs and Martinis. Very good menu full of well cooked pork dishes.
