In many countries replicas are not allowed (as if someone would spot the difference in case of a heist). I have a .22 (5.6 mm diabolo) but still in Europe. It can kill a big rodent on 20 yards. Don't think neighbors or security will appreciate it when you start waving such a thing here. (Although quite some security guys carry Faibairn Sykes look-a-likes.)

    That is so bad Jim!

Hopefully this kind of scam don't include any violence, it's not the kind of people that gonna do a robbery. But, I can understand the feeling of your wife.

Unfortunately their is no perfect security system... I think the best one is to live in a "community" where everyone can keep an eyes to other.
But even that can have his down side.

    - Camera can have a good persuasive effect
    - Dog can be a good thing, but it can be a double side blade when you have young kid and it ask a lot of time for care about it. ~ Seriously, without kid, I would think about have a pig, at 4-500kg it's extremely impressive! (keep in mind it's more easily domptable than a dog).
-ANY kind of arm, can be good if everyone know them and practice them. I have a preference for baseball bat (or anything that look like that). Sometime I practice my Aikido (sword technic) with an Indo version of baseball bat that is not made for bat ball. It's also good for the shape and balance.

One thing I have ask to my wife, when we left house, always use the same way.
I mean: If when it have someone still at home, when you left you just close the door and when it don't have anybody, you double lock everything and close all light... it's like telling to anyone watching your house when it have someone and when it don't have.
Nothing to become crazy about, but just keep the house in same state with or without people inside. keep some light open inside like if it had people. That make hard to know at first sight if it have someone or not. Same for the front gate always use the same way for lock it. **That more apply to my area as we don't need to lock the gate all the time**

Jim , I have a movement sensor alarm and when it sences the first movement a very loud yap of a dog happens, the next movement the dog growles then barks with a very real deep sheppard like bark followed 7 seconds later by a internal light switching on .

Very effective never had any unwanted visitors since installing it . Don't know where to get one here, mine came from Germany via a friend . It is called REX Alarm ,maybe you know someone in Germany.

No canine, bb gun, alarm or camera will do you any good when the maid will simply hand your stuff out to strangers. I would have fired her so fast she'd have been back in her kampung that same afternoon.

I will say that dogs are a great deterrent - very few people want to come through my gates since I got the dogs.
Most people think that the Boxer is a pitbull; the baby is a rottweiler- so, not popular... neither of them are a year old yet.

The other security measure I had was my assistant; a Gajah Putih specialist and slept with a huge knife under his pillow... (on the downside- he is Indonesian and therefore not that great at waking up ... ) - he swore to protect me. I often wonder just how messy it would have got should intruders have come in.
Now I have the hubby who is also a knife fan... that seems to be the local way to deal with trouble... I dread to think.

I fully agree with what the others have said re the maid. Make it perfectly clear that no-one is permitted through the gate unless you are there.
    Nakal but nice
My opinions are permitted to change at any point- and will do so, frequently!

What about hiring a a security guard? At home we have a security guard who sometimes helping the driver with house chores like cleaning the cars, bringing groceries when gramps went shopping. We never had uninvited guest, even mail and delivery goes to their small booth infront of the house first and he will call inside/family member cell before accepting anyone.
