4X4 Fortuner and 4X4 Pajero ?

We'd like to view the Fortuner and Pajero in 4 X 4, unfortunately no showrooms in Jakarta has this version available in stock. Anybody know whether both Fortuner and Pajero have permanent 4 X 4 system? Or if you have one in Jakarta, can we see it? Thank you.

Both the 4WD Pajero and Fortuner have proper dual transfer cases offering 2-Low, 4-Low and 4-High configurations. They are do not have permanent All-wheel-drive.

Thx for answering, hombre. I'll tell my partner about it. He had a Fortuner when he was abroad and it was a permanent 4X4 (not dual transfer). Here, we aren't sure. Thx again.

Was that, in India or South America? In most countries (e.g. Singapore), only the 2WD is available, and if there is 4WD, it's not a permanent AWD.

Hi Jstar,

yes we bought the permanent 4WD in India 2 years ago and we sold it when we moved to indonesia. we thought the same thing would be available here.

You probably mean All-Wheel-Drive which is different from Four-Wheel-Drive.

on the body, there was a sticker of "4X4 Lux", and there was no additional thingy to change from 4X2 to 4X4. Our 4WD was something like this pic:

While AWD and 4WD is very much in the gray area, there are really only 2 kinds:
- part time 4WD is where the center diff is ALWAYS locked. So the front and the rear wheels must turn at the same speed.
- full time 4WD is where the center diff is NEVER locked or CAN be locked. So in the full time mode, the 4WD can be used even on dry roads

On the Jeeps (the methods are similar across the board):
- command trac/Rock trac = part time 4WD. The transfer case locks the front and rear drive shafts
- selec trac = full time 4WD. The transfer case has a viscous coupler for the front/rear drive shafts so they can be used full time (plus open differential on the front and rear differentials). It does have an option for locking the viscous coupler so it has: full time 4wd (unlocked transfer case) => part time 4wd high (locked transfer case) => part time 4wd low (locked transfer case + lower transfer case gear). Most versions of the selec trac still has the lever on the floor to select the modes, some newer ones have a push button
- quadra trac = full time 4wd. The transfer case has a clutch pack differential engaged all the time. No option for 2WD. the transfer case differential is lockable to give part time 4WD option. Most applications only has these modes: 4WD (full time) => 4WD (part time) => 4WD low (part time). In newer applications and in some vehicles, 4WD low is omitted
- quadra drive = full time 4WD. The transfer case has a clutch pack differential engaged all the time, and adds limited slip differentials for the front and rear differentials. Basically, in some circumstances it can transfer a lot of the available torque to the one wheel with the most traction.

There is the Freedom Drive system, but I'm unfamiliar with it. I've only worked on and modified the above systems on various vehicles and frankenjeeps.
