I hope the change came with a nice rate reduction, sort of an off-set for funeral expenses, so to speak.

Hi Grapejelly, just adding my 2cents. I concur with what everyone said about medical treatments are not that reliable in Indonesia. I grew up in Jakarta but moved to Melbourne many years ago. To be honest, I wouldnt even let an Indonesian dentist do my tooth filing. So if you have kids, i think it is prudent to have medical insurance.

I definitely echo what the others have said - have the full evac cover for the WHOLE family and what the fine print of what is covered under what situations.

As for the rest of the medical coverage, I believe that there are reasonable hospitals in Surabaya and Jakarta, it really depends on what goes wrong medically and how much you are willing to pay for the medical treatment.

Another thing to consider is the health of your family and how much they get sick or injured. This will help you determine if you require any other medical cover.

I agree there .. I've been to RS Mitra Keluarga in Waru a few times and the hospital here is a far cry better than the hospitals I've been to in Melbourne. The doctors who treated me spoke very good English and one was actually a graduate from the University of Melbourne back home. The hospital was clean, well organized, fast, friendly an efficient. I had to have a pathological test done which was all done in-house. They have a pharmacy there as well so you can get the medication you've been prescribed on the spot. And the best part, is that there was very little waiting.. within 15 minutes of arriving (without an appointment), I was attended to by the doctors. (Imagine the wait at a hospital back in Melbounre!!) Although my company reimburses all of my medical expenses, the total cost of treatment for the procedures I had done would have been about 1/2 or maybe even less than the cost for the same procedure back home.

... actually I tell a lie .. the best part of it all are the young cute Javanese nurses who assisted the doctor. It makes going to a hospital an experience you look forward to.. hahaa

The issue here in Indonesia is incorrect diagnosis rather than waiting times (the hospital costs keep that down), friendliness of staff or convenient pharmacies.

I had a friend who died here and it's still a mystery as to what was actually wrong with her. The hospital said she had 'typhoid', she had 'dengue', she 'smoked too much'. They finally decided to send her to Singapore. She died before that could be organized.

yeah I get that... misdiagnosis we had to call a doctor for Pete when we were in Bali...... he kept telling us it was caused by something we know it wasnt.... Pete spends more time in Asia than OZ... so we know it was from what they said maybe they can say it to an aussie that is new to Indonesia... His leg was swollen and he could hardly walk... we actually borrowed a wheel chair to push him around... the doctor said it was from the squid WTF Peter lives on squid and has never had a problem... at least he gave him some anti inflamitories.... and other stuff....

That is really sad about your friend lantern... I am sorry...
