Question Best Prepaid mobile with unlimited data

    Hello everyone

I'm arriving Jakarta tomorrow lol so excited ! I will stay for about one year , so 1st thing I want is to buy SIM card, so what I'm looking for is :

    • Prepaid plan with unlimited data and good coverage . I got unlocked Galaxy S2 so I will keep it . from some search people recommend : Telkomsel or XL or Indosat. are they the best ?
    • An easy number like 080004444 ! when I travelled to Thailand they got things like that so I expect Indo got that too . there is mall called "Electronic city SCBD" can I find it there ?

    thanks

There's no such thing as "unlimited data" for mobile broadband. They all have fair usage caps and they vary by providers, some as low as 250mb/mo to 5gb/mo. I use XL on my unlocked iPhone and it's been working fine for me, I also have a company blackberry and they use Telkomsel.

Best carrier would depend on where you plan on using your phone, personally, I think telkomsel has the best signal quality through out Indonesia. XL is a bit hit and miss but Jakarta area is pretty reliable.

You can pick your own phone number, they're listed on the pre-paid card cover when you buy them. Pre-paid sim cards are available everywhere, even street vendors sell them, so you won't have trouble getting them. Instead of going to Electronic City, I'd recommend Ambasador Mall in Kuningan (near SCBD) to find your sim card, you'll find more choices there and usually the vendors can help you activate the sim card, help you set up and maybe even advise you of which plans to use.

Isn't Deliverypasta selling these as well? He'll probably even let you try out at your place to see which has the best coverage. (Can be big difference between XL and Indosat for instance.)

Avoid stores like Electronic City, they have no idea what they're talking about. Many small tokos around that have SIMs from multiple providers. And if you must: the big providers like XL etc. have their own shops in many malls...

I would advise Telkomsel Simpati, I have used this for 4 years with very little problem. Maybe not the cheapest, but by far the best coverage all over the country.

It is true that there is no such thing as "unlimited data" for GPRS mobile broadband, but there IS unlimited data in CDMA mobile broadband using SmartFren's "truly unlimited" plan. The only limitation (and it is significant) is that the download speed is capped at 384 kBps. Unfortunately, this does not help the OP as his device uses a GPRS sim card.

That means it's not unlimited. You can call it "truly unlimited" if the only limitation is your modem speed.

It's GSM vs CDMA (although practically you're right that GPRS always means SIM card).

Anybody have any experience with the Bridge DataRoam btw? This would offer unlimited data access across 11 'member operator networks' in Asia. The countries include Thailand, HK, Spore etc. In Indonesia its member is Telkomsel. So they seem to offer plans under a unlimited data usage scheme. So you have like 3 or 5 days of unlimited data usage for a fixed amount. Could be interesting for heavy users who travel a lot. Don't know about capping and hopefully it's not fair use...

There is "unlimited" data plan from telkomsel speed is around 500kbps with 512mb fair usage. after that the speed will decrease to 64kbps which i can say.. sucks.
Im currently using XL but yeah, based on quota. Speed can be up to 3.6mbps .. in my place speed test result around 2.5mbps. Ive tried speedtest in several places like at remogard place in thamrin area steadily around 2mbps and in BSD as well.
I will suggest XL. It works great until now. If you live close by i can come to your place stop by for a while and we can do speedtest
*i hope im not violating posting rules but if u do need a data plan simcard PM me*

Normal gsm mobile phone number in indonesia vary from 10-12 digits (or 11). easy number always more expensive than normal random number.

As always, you need to buy prepaid SIM cards from all the big 3 providers and test them where you live (or wherever you plan to use your smart phone). The fastest data plan is not going to do you any good if your apartment receives poor or no cell signal.

May I ask what are the 2nd and 3rd big network provider in Indonesia respectively?
