Yes, as Addee said they cut off the corners of the old passport. They return the old one so if there are any visas etc still valid in the old passport you just show both new and old one.

My old one was stapled together with the new one. Soon I'll end up with three passports stapled up together (doh!)

no.. they did not return my last passport, since i do not have any visa that was still valid ( they returned the previous passport since at that time there is one visa that was still valid) ... but you can ask the passport back if you wish to keep it as souvenir ...

When living in Malang (Java) my wife's previous passport was retained but they noted a reference to it's number on one of the back pages of her new one !!
they returned old passport. I keep my 4 old passports.
what I expect, they can issue passport with more pages, not limited to 48 pages only.
Everytime I renew my passport, I get the new passport with number - extra work required to amend other related documents.
