    Default Teaching at AIS

Anyone here have any experience with teaching conditions at the Australian International School Jakarta? Puspawarna's post about the ISR website lead me to check it out myself and I came to a rather negative post from 2006 by an ex-AIS teacher (apparently) and I'd like to know what others think. As a teacher who has taught in a Jakarta high school, I am aware of many of the challenges expat teachers face that aren't necessarily obvious to the parents of the students, but as one who has considered applying to teach at AIS at some point in the future, I'd like to hear from anyone who can offer any input.

BTW, the above-mentioned post is here, but I take it with a grain of salt - too much subjectivity in it, but some things, if true, are cause for concern:

Wow - some of that stuff is from a long time ago, but at least one complaint is fairly close to the time when my son went there (January 2008 to June 2009). If conditions were that bad, I really want to thank all the teachers for being so wonderful and dedicated to the students even if they were facing a lot of personal stress. It really makes me admire people who put up with bad working conditions and still manage to do well by students. To any teachers reading this who have maintained a good classroom environment and helped your students while you were seething at a school administration (AIS or any other school) - on behalf of the students and families, THANK YOU.

In fact the post is dated 2006 and refers to a time 6 years prior to that.

Oops, no reading comprehension points for me - I noticed that the 2006 post referred to 2000, but I also looked at the more recent post which said a similar thing happened much later (but at a different school), and thought they were still talking about AIS. Duh.

Yes, sorry, it does refer to about the year 2000, but the poster does mention the name of the owner who is still visible on the AIS website. If the allegations are (were) true, it surprises me because that sort of thing is (including teachers having to share accommodation, teachers 'escaping' back home to Aust/US etc) commonplace in the lower-grade English language courses that readily hire non-professional teachers and like to do their best to take advantage of them (been there, experienced that myself), not what would be expected from a high-rating International school which has stringent requirements for its teaching staff:

That's why I'm keen to hear from anyone else, because if it is true, then I'll happily not bother with them and go back to my previous non-International Nat+ school instead, where we were looked after very well.

Hi ausdag, It's lucky for me to know there were some allegations happened at AIS. My husband's collegues also send their kids to JIS but not AIS and I feel strange.

Right now, I feel I'm fortunate that we have decided to enrol our son at JIS last month.

Puspawarna & Sweetmaria did respond me and they truly lead me to a lot of questions & answers for consideration. Thanks for their kind thoughtfulness . I'm sure a lot of newcomers like us will find this Forum such a great success & informative. Great jobs for all.

Indeed, I spend 1-2 hours daily to learn from all the threads. Found it very interesting and fun to read sometimes.

    Hi Irene,

Been talking with an ex-teacher from AIS and it seems that things are a lot different there now. Life is more pleasant for teachers so looks like the allegations are a thing of the past.
