I hired a maid and a part-time gardner today, they are man and wife and will live-in.
Thanks for all the advice so far. It really made me more comfortable in talking to them about their tasks and salary.

Sounds great - a couple can be a really good way to staff up. They will be able to coordinate tasks and you won't have to worry about it. Of course, if a relative dies or it is holiday time, they'll want to both disappear at the same time. Not necessarily a big deal, just something to be prepared for. (When our son was an infant, we actually got slightly nervous about the times when we had zero staff - now it seems odd to me that we ever cared.)

We will be moving to a bigger house next week, and as my wife will return to college, we have hired another girl of 17. The older one will take more responsibilty for our baby when my wife is out, the younger one will do most of the cleaning, with the exception of the ironing.

the older one will now get 700,000 and the young one 450,000 for the first three months, if she is good it will go up to 500,000.

If the older one stays with us for the next 3 years, we have told her we will put her through school, so she will have high school education when she leaves us.

I hope there is school that can accept a student of 21 yo,,,,, and hopefully the girl will have a suficient self confidence to be the oldest in the class where the classmates have average age of around 14-15 yo.....

My suggestion is that you can hire a lady who come to your house from morning to afternoon and do all the housework (cleaning, washing, dusting, cooking, and so on) so she does not have to stay at your home. People call it 'pocokan' or something like that. My friends with babies has done that and it's successful, because they do not like other people to stay with them at night and it is cheaper. You only have to pay salaries and one meal (and transportation fee from their house to yours). A friend of mine pays IDR400,000 each month for a woman who do 'pocokan' while she is working. And I myself pay IDR40,000 per week to my neighbor who comes once a week to do all the cleanings.
A friend of mine staying in Jakarta also only pay IDR400,000 for 'pocokan' housemaid. The maid comes everyday at noon and does everything needed. She also hires her maid's husband to take care the garden (my friend provides all the tools) and as 'ojek' rider and she only has to pay IDR400,000 too.
To keep them happy, I suggest you to buy them clothes or give them extra money before Iedul Fitri because they have to give something for their extended families.
And sometimes the maids quit without warnings and they will give you a thousand reasons. Probably they only want you to rise their salaries but not brave enough (or too shy) to ask you directly. If you have offered higher salary but they still want to go, then just let them go and find a new one.
