    Default Info about Manado

    Hi to everyone, I’m Matteo.
I live in Indonesia since one year and now, me and my brother would like move on Manado (or Menado) on September.

I spent already several weeks around Manado area but not enought to get the mean informations, well, to be sure about it.

Our dream is to integrate us with the “biasa” Manado lifestyle and open a typical italian restaurant.
Do you want help us to make it real?
    So...

    - Do you think could be a good choice make it in Manado?
    - My bahasa is still too bad to make me understand clearly, do you know some cheap school for bule?
    - Considereting how it is important, do you know someone who speaks English and could collaborate helping to translate us for the first steps? (we pay for it)
    - I know in Malalayang area there are the cheapest accomodations (I heard something about 5 million rupias each year for a small house) is it true? Do you know somebody who rents something cheap for a month or an online newspaper with some renting announcements?
    - Do you have some other tips I didn’t consider?

Thanks to everyone, I’m waiting your answers.

    The best regards, Matteo.

    Hi Matteo,

    Welcome to the forum.

When you are in manado, make sure you contact me. I will introduce you to the wonderful Manado city and the expat community. We are about 150 to 200 foreign resident and you get to know pretty much everyone quite quickly. About 30 of them are using occasionally this forum. They may chime in.

    1. Never say Menado. Manado is much better and it is the way we call our city in Manado. Menado sounds... well... not manadonese.

An excellent choice when it comes to live in Indonesia. Manado is foreign friendly, safe, laidback...etc. I've almost only good things to say about it and about the manadonese. However, opening an italian restaurant is maybe not the wisest business to do, no offense intended. Manadonese, though foreign friendly, are not adventurous when it comes to food. Most restaurants who do not serve chinese food or minahasan food ended up bankrupted. There is a small italian community, but I don't think that you can rely only on them to have a succesful venture. You will have to appeal to the local market, and for that you will have to compromize with your notion of "italian food". If you cook with a lot of rica and some cakaleng, then you may succeed.

A school to learn bahasa manado you mean? Or a school for the education of your kids?
If it's the former, spend some time with me and you will quickly learn the basics. My english is far from being perfect and my english native friends have learnt a lot of bahasa manado just speaking "english" with me. I just mix both language when I speak to them. Alternatively I speak only bahasa Manado with the long timers. Easier.

What do you need to translate?

Malalayang, close to the sea, has what we call kos (small studio either independant or in a shared house).
A house for 5 millions rupiah per year??? Well, the person who get you this information is clearly misinformed. A decent kos would set you up at about 1 million per month. A house would have to be rented for a year in advance and I would say that at 30 to 50 millions a year you may have a house where one could live in an OK manner. Do not expect a pool or a garden for this price, though. There are cheaper alternative sometimes. You may well find a decent house for 15 millions a year, but it's rare. I've been renting a house for 6 millions a year during 5 years, just to park some cars from a guy who just wanted to have a tenant so that his family didn't squat the house while he was abroad working on a ship! But this is exceptional to be honest. I was lucky to find it and even if I wasn't using the house, it was a good deal for what I wanted to do with it. When I stopped, the guy rented it in less than a week for 30 millions a year, which was more like the market price for the type of house he had.

To give you an idea, the cheaper kos catering to people with the lower income start at IDR 250.000 (rare) to IDR 300.000 per month and this is just a simple kamar in a not so well maintained house, with shared bathroom and shared kitchen in a noisy area.

Atlantis. Thanks a lot for answer and receive me so kindly and quickly!
I will honored to meet you and all the community of MAnado, and I can speak in the name of my brother too...

    1) When I've been there, I could breathe that friendly air. It was amazing. About the "Choice" of restaurant, never offense... I ask for true answers, not masked lies
For this reason we want to spend some time there to understand the Manado reality and thanks a lot about your tips

    2) eheheheh.... no, school for us, the bigger kids. I speak a bit of bahasa already, but nothing more useful than a really basic speech heheheh
I'm sure in few times we will learn it

    3) Yes, I mean. When I was there, I was with some friends (but they can't help me on September because they are in Jakarta) who helped me to translate everything. I don't know if was just a my wrong feeling, but I don't remember a large number of people speaking English (for sure I'm not an English mother tongue too). So, maybe we need someone who translate us if we want looking for a business place and dealing prices or similar. I mean, for speaking about something important

    4) I supposed too that the info I got was totally unreal, but never stops to hope eheheh
Thanks a lot about the average prices info, that's what I thought so...
I think we will looking for something closer to a Kos for the first months. Do you know if I can look for something already online? (I'm in Bali right now...) or that kind of business is better make directly on Manado?

I'm sorry for my repetition...but thanks a lot for your kindness.......
