Default Changing status in Jakarta from Tourist visa to Family visa?

My wife got a job in Indonesia, and the people that hired her refused to file the index 317 for me (that is, the Limited Stay Visa of Family Visa). So we are told that she can apply for me. We are going to do this in Jakarta. Information online is scarce... Can anyone help me answering this questions?

    1. What documents do I need to present in the immigration office to apply for the Limited Stay Visa?

    2. Is it possible to apply while we are in the country? Or do I need to leave and apply through an embassy or consulate outside of Indonesia?

    3. How long will the process take? I have 30 days of tourist visa!

    Thanks!

    1. See the required documents for the ITAS/KITAS (Temporary Residency Permit) in the ref. below . Each immigration officer may ask some very few different documents , so you need to ask the specific immigration office (@ your city's office/"ITAS , ITAP" counter or @ the Jakarta's Direktorat Jenderal Imigrasi) . The reference is for a ITAS/KITAS sponsored by Indonesian spouse , but any ITAS/KITAS type has the same procedure .

http://www.livinginindonesiaforum.or...2841#post72841 , (post no.128 , example of converting Sosbud into KITAS)

    2. You have 2 options :
    (a) Get a "sponsor letter" , leave Indonesia , and get a Social Cultural/Family Visit Visa - single entry (Sosbud Visa - single entry) in an Indonesian Embassy in Singapore , or Kuala Lumpur , ..
Return to Indonesia and start , within the validity of the Sosbud or its extensions (around 150 days maximum) , the process to convert the Sosbud to ITAS/KITAS (like the ref. above) .
This is the best option . I am not sure if in your case , the sponsor is your wife or the company which hires her . I would guess it is your wife , but if it is the company , you need to get a Business Visit Visa - single entry , instead of the Sosbud Visit Visa - single entry .

    (b) Get a VITAS (Visa ITAS) "pre-approval" at the Direktorat Jenderal Imigrasi in Jakarta (maybe you can start it online , but later you can go there to pay Rp50k for the telex/fax , see ref. below)) , go to Singapore , or KL ,..with a copy of this "pre-approval" telex/fax , and get the VITAS at an Indonesian Embassy . Return to Indonesia and , within 7 days , convert the VITAS into a ITAS/KITAS .

    http://www.livinginindonesiaforum.or...ndonesian-wife (VITAS > ITAS/KITAS) .

    3. Unfortunately you cannot convert your Tourist Visa into the ITAS/KITAS . Only the sponsored single entry Sosbud Visa or Business Visa can be converted (but the sponsor must be the same for both Visit Visa/ITAS) .
I believe you can get the VITAS "pre-approval" in Jakarta in about 10 days (if you have the documents ready to be submitted) .

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Remember that your ITAS/KITAS will have the same expiration date as your wife's ITAS/KITAS . If the expiration is in less than 180 days , I would suggest you to stay with a Sosbud Visa - single entry (up to 180 stay days if extended 4 times) .

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you prefer to pay around Rp 4 millions to avoid doing all the bureaucracy , see below some agents (I don't know any of them) . Be sure the price include the SKLD (from Police) and SKTT (from Catatan Sipil) .

Thank you SO MUCH for the detailed information! It seems that my best option would be to hire someone, I don't know the language and frankly all this paperwork really scare me!

A question: why is option 1, apply for a Sosbud in Singapore, coming back and convert the visa to Kitas, the best one? It would seem like option 2, getting the pre-approval, is easier!

    Thanks,

    E.

Through the Sosbud we have more time to prepare the documents , and if we don't live in Jakarta , we don't need to go personally to Jakarta for the approval related to the Direktorat jenderal Immigrasi .
