The fighting will settled by the government and the resistence. None of the other countries wants to directly involved. The "proxy war" is by arming the different sides. US / West is already arming the resistence. Russia / Iran is already arming the regime.

It may be the both contending sides in the Syrian Civil War are rotten to the core and undeserving of support. It is true that many proxy wars are being fought in Syria, and many disingenous and duplicitous efforts have been made to reach peace. All of that, however, does not relieve the international community from trying to put an end to the carnage and mayhem, and trying to protect those who are caught in the middle. This is typically where I part with from the likes of Fisk who usually attributes one single nefarious motive to all interested in intervening. For instance, I may support the removal of the Assad regime, but my motives are likely diametrically opposed to those of the KSA. On Planet Fisk, no such nuance is entertained.

The Syrian rebels are supported by both al-qaeda and the West, does that mean they are now technically partners???

A war of attrition, a Pyrrhic struggle...

Note that the FSA looks more like a confederation rather than a united command...

Right. After what's transpired how could he ever go back to ruling the country in a "normal" manner? I hear Moscow is a good place to live, particularly if you've got the backing of the Kremlin.

You can see the fatigue from Iraq, Afghanistan and the Arab Spring. Turkey, a NATO member, and Syria are not going at it. In other times, this could have been used as the justification for stepping in. So far there are no takers.

Sergio Pinheiro, head of the UN Commission investigating the Syrian conflict, said recently that he thinks this is a war where no military victory is possible. So what is the UN going to do? How about dividing the country into independent North & South or East & West? The majority Sunnis on one side. The Allawites, Shiites, Christians & other minorities on the other side. End of conflict.

The UN? Surely you mean the five permanent members of the Security Council.
