    Default Slingbox? Netflix?

Has anyone got a slingbox and how is it working out for you. I saw a thread form around a year ago on this and am wondering if there are any updates, or more folks using them. We also are thinking of getting a US based VPN to watch netflix, and wondering if anyone has experience with this as well.

    Thanks!

I tried a Slingbox for some time and was happy with the result in Singapore. In RI however, the audio was okay but the video sucked. Also annoying was that it had to stay active in the country of origin at all times. And I had to upgrade the box for the digital (cable) signal. Add to that most news programs and tv shows from the BENELUX are (legally) posted on the web now, and you understand the decision was easy.

Besides the disadvantages of the annoying VPN and/or proxy setup which leads to slow results anyway, I personally don't see the use of Netflix anymore with all these HBO and FOX movie channels on the Indovision and First Media networks. Also in High Definition. And with a street price of $0.80 for a (recent) movie or tv series DVD...

Indovision is satellite (as is TelkomVision) and First Media is cable. There are more providers of course but these are the biggies. I went for cable since it was more convenient (in combination with Internet), but they need to have a presence in your area.

Major movie channels on FIRST MEDIA:

    HBO
    HBO FAMILY
    HBO HITS
    HBO SIGNATURE

    RED

    CINEMAX

    FOX FAMILY MOVIES
    FOX MOVIES PREMIUM

I guess they are in sync with the US for the series (TrueBlood season 5 premiered last Saturday, their own productions are broadcasted on Monday night). Movies can be a bit antiquated. Also, they are multi-language if necessary (so for these movie channnels but also Discovery etc. you can not only select subtitles but they can also be dubbed in Bahasa I, Mandarin, etc.). http://www.hboasia.com/index.php/home

Most providers have different packages you can choose from, and via the cable also in combination with different internet speeds of course (1.5Mb, 3Mb, ...). I purchased my own wireless 802.11N router since customer service had no idea what I was talking about when I asked the specs of the wireless solution they offered (and it seemed like a 802.11G).

Most of the providers also have the HD channels....ah, and also Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon and Disney Channel.

I have HBO in my cable TV package. Edited for sexual content. I've never seen any bare breasts on HBO in Indonesia, sadly.

Now you can at least say you've seen a pair of Great Tits.

I have a number of friends who use Slingbox...mostly for US sports. However, if you are creative more and more you can find most of what you need on the web. The time difference makes following sports in the US difficult far more than a lack of content. It is just no fun watching the NFL Sunday night at 1AM or Monday morning.

i use Indovision. they get their broadcasts from Singaporean-based Asian versions of Fox. so i end up with prudish broadcasts of Mad Men with blurred out bodies and shit. they even truncated bits off scenes (and you only realize someone's done it with someone after they act weird around each other). they even blurred out some mild nudity off Archer. ARCHER. geez, it's a cartoon for God's sake. technically, they're not even real butts/boobs!
