Doing it this way prevents the job from being a monotonous, repetitive task and will keep you more alert throughout the day.
I would have thought that landing would be a required part of the co-pilot's experience. What's the point of having all the flying hours if you have never actually landed the plane?

Very strong Australian accent, so could have been 747-8? It was a new Airbus though...

In my day it was mandatory for ALL licensed pilots, including management/simulator instructors to do a physical landing every so often...I seem to recall at least once per month. Otherwise, a flight simulator or an en-route instructed training/landing session was required.

In most airlines, this is the case, the co-pilots do their share of the flying from take-off to landing. A co-pilot is pretty much an apprentice, if you like. They're the less experience of the cockpit crew but they are fully qualified pilots, and the second in command of the ship. They're expected to fly the aircraft in all phases of flight, just as the captain is expected to. But with Lion Air however, it appears that this is no longer the case.

This is still the case today too, Davita (except the aforementioned airline). Infact, the Indonesian Civil Aviation Safety Regulation requires all pilots to conduct 3 take-offs and landings within 90 days, or their pilots license is no longer current. The take-offs and landings can be done in a simulator but whether Lion Air does this with their co-pilots or not, I don't know, but it is a legal requirement to do so.

they would probably charge them for the use of the simulator and considering that they have to put in the first 500 hours (?) without pay I think that would be unreasonable.
