    Default gap year opportunities

Our 19 yr old son may come with us for a year as a break from college. Any ideas of jobs/volunteer things he could do?

It is very difficult to do volunteer work in Indonesia because to do any kind of work it is required to have a tied "Work Permit"/"Temporary Residency Permit" which is very difficult and expensive to get . Be aware that working (even for free) in Indonesia without those 2 documents may result in up to 5 years in jail + a fine of up to Rp500 millions .

But there are plenty of other things you could do, that are not work.

For a year? Unless you have a lot of money to travel around Indo, I don't know what you'd do for a whole year without work.
Do more of what makes you happy.

I know lots of foreigners who spend a year or more in Indonesia living very cheaply in Solo studying gamelan. Of course, that wouldn't appeal to most people.

So far it's been about 9 months with my occupation as being "Husband." (meaning I don't work).
