    Default Veggie food...

    Hello,

Ill be moving to Jakarta in August 09. I'm wanting to know if there is much choice for veggies - i don't eat meat/fish/eggs...

Im not fussed about egg in food such as cake etc...just not fried eggs and the sort.

Can anyone suggest nice dishes to try, places to eat? (I'm not sure what part of Jakarta i will be in yet)

Also what is the easiest way to let people know i don't eat the above foods?

    Thanks

    Hi Twinkle

Finding vegetarian food is rather difficult unless you want to dine at some vegetarian restaurants but its very expensive here. Be prepared to pay Apx US$7 to US$8 for a simple cup of soup.

Try the local Gado Gado, Kataprak (think its right spelling), they are vegetarian, tell ask them not to add boiled egg.

The Burger King here has Vegetarian Burger and its yummy.

Komala’s Indian Restaurant severs some really nice south Indian meal and reasonable.

Salad is available in most western restaurants and some also have bars. Some also carry vegetarian menu.

In Italian restaurants if they don’t have a vegetarian menu, don’t be afraid just ask for one to be prepared.

    All the best

    Thanks for the advice.

I'm more than willing to cook my own food too. Can you buy salad stuff locally? i heard there is not much veg around.

    Thanks xx

    Hi Twinkle,

You could actually find a lot of veggies in supermarket, hyper market, and also traditional market.
But I really do not recommend you to go to traditional market, since you would hardly able to communicate with the seller over there. most of them could not understand English.

There are some veggies that are quite easy to find in Jakarta like spinach, lettuce, brocolli, cabbage, cauliflower, bean, etc.
Gado-gado and Ketoprak is also a good choice, but only if you like peanut sauce.
Gado-gado has boiled tofu-cabbage-bean-potatoes-sprout bean mixed with peanut sauce.
But Ketoprak has boiled bihun (vermicelli?)-lontong (rice steamed)-tofu-sprout bean mixed with peanut sauce.
There is also Karedok, which is only available in sundanese restaurant, it's raw veggies (cabbage-sprout bean-cucumber) mixed with peanut sauce.

You can buy mayonaisse sauce in supermarket/hypermarket though if you want to create you own salad.

    Kind Regards

It’s true the variety is rather limited for vegetarians. Since you don’t mind cooking, try your hands on local vegetables. Try adding local herbs and soya products like tafu and tempe. You can find ingredients here at local stores but please be prepared to compromise on quality and taste. At Indian stores you can find variety of dried/canned lentils and beans for salads than anywhere else in Jakarta.

Are you a vegetarian too Twinkle? I am one and created few new recipe on my own using local ingredients. Those who tried it, liked it. If you need it in future feel free to ask.
