I would be an angkot driver or a kenek. Sometimes I enjoy teaming with some of our angkot driver and act as kenek.

    pros:
    - I have some really good laugh. I love to confuse my fellow manadonese. If they are surprised that a foreigner is acting as kenek I tell them that I am a trainee from Dinas pariwisata which has a plan to hire foreign kenek and foreign angkot driver to boost tourism and to cater to the tourist population. Some obviously understand that I am joking, but others are persuaded that I tell the truth and comment on how maju is Manado to be able to have foreign kenek.
    - Our drivers often get tips that they wouldn't have normally, some passengers being afraid to appear pelit by asking their change back. May be they think that my driver have to pay this expat kenek . Hence the tip.
    - In just 1 hour acting as a kenek you are aware of all the current gossips of your city. If you have prepared yourself by reading the local paper earlier, then you are a star and are the one informing the whole angkot about gossips. You become a kenek AND a star.
    - Your angkot quickly fills up with cewek cantik. That's the bule effect. Manadonese choose their angkot. They don't take the first random one. It has to be clean, with variasi and with a sound system. A bule in the front is the top. Drivers are happy and I feel like 20 years younger.

Cons: I quickly give up. 20 km at the pace of a turtle is the maximum I can cope with. But the fun is worth it.

I also love to drive the angkot myself, the driver becoming kenek. Tips are even bigger when I do it. I even went through a LLAJ sweeping without being arrested. Most officers know me due to the fact that I am the one who take care of all the licenses for truks and angkot on behalf of my wife. They were so puzzled to see me behind the wheel that they forgot to pull us over. I would have had trouble to produce a SIM A umum.
I have also driven trucks Dyna, leading a convoy of 3 or more trucks, down the transsulawesi pairing with some of our drivers for fun. My wife was a few kilometers up front driving our car, to inform me if PJR was to be expected.

If you pass by Manado and want to add a truck or angkot driver experience on your CV /resume, please contact me.

I'd love to be a kenek myself, but there aren't too many female keneks in Jakarta, and I wouldn't feel comfortable becoming kenek in a crowded bus, unless Pony is around to act as bodyguard in a porcupine suit!

I'd love to be a 'polisi cepek'. I mean, stoping cars (even high-en cars) like you own the streets would feel dope as hell.......for me at least haha

We can work on the bule thing. We can team up. I am bule and only have a SIM A biasa. You being indonesian with a SIM B we could appear almost legit.

I can manage to pick you up at bandara Sam Ratulangi Manado with a Toyota Dyna 130 HT if you need a ride in town. Trucks have a kas ekspedisi, so whatever lugages you have it will fit as long as we don't exceed 8,5 tons (though the legal maximum charge should be around 3 or 4 tons I think). July 14th? It's the french national celebration day. I can even decorate the truck with a french and an indonesian flag and organise a parade in the city finishing in the parking lot of Bumi Beringin for dinner.

At the moment trucks are contracted on the Manado-Palu-Balikpapan route but I consider adding one more unit. Who knows if it will be a done deal by July...

I'd like to try being a kenek, just so I get the chance to yell "tareeeeeeeeek!"

Philippe, I would suggest that you apply as an ojek payung, where it would really suck if it DOESN'T rain.

Deal hon! Can I sell my organic cucumbers while I am working as your bodyguard? If someone is messing around with you, I can force him to smell my armpit (it'll be deadly I tell you in a weather like Jakarta).
I am pink therefore I am ham
