    Default Sumba

Kodi. If you can only see one place in Sumba, Kodi is it:

South-central Sumba. The raja Julius here is a really nice guy who made us coffee:

Somewhere literally in the middle of nowhere. GPS coordinates, S10 09.146 E120 20.016:

The southern coast is an endless stretch of one gorgeous bay after another:

    Mauricio,
I always enjoy your pics..although the deforestation evident in many of them is depressing.
What are those stone monuments about, did you get to find out?

Those stone monuments are the renowned tombs of Sumba! The whole island is littered with them. Some are modest and small, many are massive and baroque in their ornamentation.

The Sunda arc of volcanic island extends to Lombok, Sumbawa and Flores. From then on, it bends northward toward Maluku. The island of Sumba (and Timor) to the south of the Sunda arc is, therefore, not of volcanic origin or substrate. Sumba and Timor are raised sea-bed. This means that the ground is porous limestone which supports little surface water or good soils. It is not surprising that forests are not bountiful on these islands. Finally, the vegetation begins to resemble the scrub-brush of Australia (see my thread on the Wallace line), rather than the tall, wide-canopy trees of Asia.

As Mauricio explained, that's Sumba's nature. Much like NTT, where my mother is originally from. very barren.

Not all NTT is barren. The western half of Flores is quite lush and wet, with rich volcanic soils. Some of the most handsome sawah in Indonesia is in western Flores:
