Can you cancel current Kitas from abroad ?

Hi all.
Friend of mine living in thailand had a week to go on his Indo Kitas and went to Bangkok Indo embassy to try and cancel it but was told by embassy staff there that he had to go back to Bali and have his agent there cancel it, he explained that he he now lives in thailand and has no immediate plans on returning to Bali, but may go back for a holiday in the near future on a VOA, simply cause his Kitas runs out in the next week or so.So here is his dillema,when he goes back to Bali / Indo he was told that customs will pull there usual tricks. Money money money......Is there some way to have it cancelled before the date of its expiry ? the company I had a kitas under is now gone from Indonesia.It is it an offence to not have it cancelled or just simply let it run out.?

The only way I know to cancel a ITAS/KITAS is doing it at the immigration office which issued the ITAS/KITAS (or the other office which revised the ITAS address in the "blue book" , if the case) .

From abroad there are not much he can do. Only his sponsor could help from within Indonesia, and this even if your friend isn't in Indonesia.
