    Default Pop-Tarts

Where do I find Pop-Tarts around here? And will they cost me a fortune?

A couple of weeks ago I saw them at Ranch. But they are frequently unavailable, and flavors are limited. I suppose they do cost a fortune, I haven't looked.

It isn't hard to make a healthier homemade version: make a sugar-free piecrust using whole wheat flour (if you can find THAT! - sometimes Kemchicks has it) and sneaking in a few nutritious extras like ground flax seed (readily available here), ground walnuts, etc. (Truly serious nutrition nazis may want to use corn oil for the butter - I usually use half butter and half oil.) Use cooked fruit with no added sugar for the filling, thickened with a bit of cornstarch. Mango and apple are both good choices.

You can even roll out your dough and make pop-tart shaped tarts, although I recommend against that because it is difficult and time-consuming, and you shouldn't put the result into the toaster anyway. Just make regular small tarts, that is very quick.

It's a guilty pleasure for my kid to have pie tarts like these for breakfast - and they are not nearly as hideous as highly processed commercial poptarts.

Full disclosure: we have poptarts in the cabinet as I write this. Yup, those nasty Kellogg's things. I wouldn't dream of buying them, but my husband will periodically. (Yes, as a matter of fact we do have one of those marriages where HE wants to go to McDonald's and I don't ... why do you ask?)

Too bad I can only make cookies and simple b'day cakes :-( If you don't mind getting it from "bakul kue" (home industry cake maker), I can recommend my friends, just pm me. They can make customized cup cakes, b'day cakes, etc. Just choose the theme and they can make it.

Plenty of pop tarts in BATS and the like.

Those places are pricey... I'll just stick to my gado-gado, then... Meh. And I'll try that recipe. I'm craving for cherry/strawberry, really.

Thank you for the replies, though. I'll head over to Ranch Market/BATS/Kemchicks when I land a bonus. LOL.
