I personally keep the hood on most of the time to protect from scratches and I've never scratched a lens.
I agree with you 1000%, particularly about the fancy-schmancy L lens with a cheapoid "protector" in front of it. The only situation where I would countenance putting one of these "filters" on would be to protect the lens from splash in marine or wet and windy situations. Other than that, the hood and developing a routine manner (almost like a playbook that you use everytime) of handling your equipment will do the trick

No, as alluded by Jstar, there are linear polarizers and circular polarizers. Some sensors, like the sensors on Canon EOS digital SLRs require a circular polarizer otherwise the metering/focusing (I can't remember which one) mechanism will give inaccurate results. Beyond the linear and circular dichotomy, there's also a special manufacturing process that results in some the higherst quality polarizers, the Kasemann* process of laminating the polarizing film onto the glass surface. If you've got deep pockets, Kasemann is the way to go.

    * My apologies to the punctilious germanophones for omitting the umlaut over the first "a" in Kasemann and yesterday in Gelandewagen in another thread.

I use a UV or neutral or light warming filter in front of my lenses. I used to play in dusty, sandy, muddy areas a lot. But there is a rule of thumb that I go by, my filters need to be about 10% of the value of the lens or >$75 whichever is higher.

Well, I use Nikon, not the Canon EOS Dslr. But i think you were talking about the AF sensor (cmiiw?), so i think it's still safer for me to buy the circular instead of the linear polarizer.
Someone told me the sensor is not really the reason to buy a circular polarizer tho. It's more about the light metering system.
    Any thought on this?
At most times, it's the disability to take your own glasses that might be a barrier for change.

Any camera using Ttl metering and/or focusing needs circular polarizer. Well, to be specific, using TTL metering and focusing through the semi reflective mirror. Old SLRs use fully reflective mirrors and have the sensor(s) on the prism housing. New ones are behind the mirror.

That last pic did not have a polarizer on it. No Photoshop, no PP, no artificial lighting, no nothing, straight out of the camera, converted from RAW with the stock Canon program. It simply had a first-rate lens, the Canon 135L.

Here's one with a polarizer. Notice how it lets you "see" beneath the water, how the glare off the clouds is tamed and how the blues in the sky are saturated. Again, no PP or Photoshop except for slight exposure correction.

that lens is very impressive. Wish i could afford it. Do you still have your 70-200 f4 L IS?

That was taken with either the 17-40L or the 16-35L, I can't remember off the top of my head.

Yap, I still have the 70-200 f4 L IS. You want it?

I meant the picture of the moss. the landscape was not supposed to be included in my quote. Yes i want the 70-200 f4 L IS because its the same filter diameter as my existing lens which i have a poarizer for. Problem is i cant afford it at this moment.
