    2. Lighting set up? did you fire any strobes into the back drop?
here is my guess on the lighting: 3 lights: one to the back drop (seems gridded), one softbox camera left and one bare strobe with either a grid or reflector camera right from behind the subject.
    Was i close enough?
I have never made a low key image before and this has certainly got me thinking!
    1. The backdrop is my dining room wallpaper
    2. 3 strobes: one main in reflective umbrella camera left. One griddded into the background. One camera right behind subject as rim in reflective umbrella. And one silver reflector for fill camera right.

Shot RAW, so post processing involved white balance, saturation and curve adjustments. In addition a tiny bit of skin smoothing (the make up was really awesome, actually done by a makeup artist especially for the photo session), and a bit of highpass filter.

Didn't find any artwork we liked to decorate our bedroom so we made our own.

Limbs and accessories are courtesy of my wife and photography is from yours truly.

The black and purple one is of my wife wearing a purple dress and it will go in the dining room.

The rice fields is from my last hike in Sentul hills and will go in our living room.

The red ones will go to our bedroom.

The canvas prints are currently under production, so I made this little render in photoshop to give an idea of the look for the bedroom.

So far the proofs have turned out pretty good but I'll wait for the final prints to give a recommendation or not of the printing shop we used in BSD City.

Nice and artsy. Thanks for sharing. I have yet to find a decent print shop. To this day i have been unable to find a place that doesent edit my images. They always crop the hell out of my images even when i have precropped them to fit the size i will print. But the absolute worst is when they change the colours and contrast of jpegs in order to ''calibrate'' their printer. I sometimes request them please not to edit the colours and the results are always terrible. I asked them a few times to calibrate their printers rather than my images but that never goes down well with anybody.
wish i had some stuff to share here but since the birth off our son... Well anyone with kids knows.

Is your own monitor color calibrated? You've got to make sure of that first otherwise even if their printer is color accurate, you will never get the result you were expecting.

no it is not colour calibrated, however i use a bit of logic. In photoshop you can check the RGB values with the colour checking tool and you can view the histogram to see how much clipping will occure in the image. I have correctly white balanced my images and they have had little to no clipping of highlights and shadows, but after printing i often get a hue of some sort and always get terrible clipping in both highlights and shadows (way too much contrast added). I have seen them fiddling with levels in the print shops on every occasion. my home printer does a better job than the labs, but ofcourse i cant use it to do large prints and the ink cartridges run empty every 6 images..

I see... Well, keep looking! I printed heaps of 4 x 6 cm (around 350) from a Fujifilm lab in Serpong and they all came out crap. I didn't care too much because they are for personal album use (family memories) and not for display, also it was quite cheap.

The one I'm using for the canvas are a Kodak certified shop which is owned by 2 wedding photographers. So far so good and I hope the final prints look just as good.
