Also, I've just stumbled upon a very appropriate article which should give you some insight on balancing ambient outdoor light with flash by none other than Mr Strobist himself: http://strobist.blogspot.com/2011/12/soccer-through-sunset.html#more

    I
n a nutshell, he's using a ND filter not to kill the ambient but to reduce the depth of field. As a result, he needs lots of power which is why he is using a beauty dish something like 2 feet away from his subject.

Here is another article of his regarding ND Filters: http://strobist.blogspot.com/2010/06...-of-field.html
thanks for the comments. yes there is noise because this room was really big and dark. the roof is 15-20 meters high and the walls are atleast 40 meters from end to end i was using ISO 3200 but the next day with all the doors open and a bit more sun filtering through i was able to go down to ISO 1600. shadows were not touched during post. there is little editing. I had taken around 160 shots and edited the lot in half a day which was pretty much only converting from RAW to jpeg and fixing exposures on the shots the videographer destroyed with his flood light.
for the wedding i was using full power on my 430 for bounce flash. the paid photographer called it quits when he failed to get the exposure so i guess its a good thing i was around. without their video light it was hell for them. anyway here are my favourites from the day. hope there are atleast a few good ones in here (btw i was married in this same church in 2009):

and to continue.. a fun shot..

and this dosent even show half of the size of the church. there are still 2 sets of wide benching left and right and the roof is still waaayyy up there

and lastly i was surprised with this one. outdoors with on camera flash bounced behind me off a wall. pity about the car in the background!! i was only messing around because i never believed my speedlight could fill the shadows

i have tons more, but i dont want to bore you guys more than i already have

Those are amazing pictures beepop....you have an art.

I don't intend to be rude but the last picture of the wedded couple just lends itself to humor.

Imagine the captured sayings if it went public. Especially if the groom's glove, near his crotch, was more prominent.

The eyes say so many things....I can hardly contain myself....but....I will, and leave to others.

www.flickr.com make an account on that sight and upload your pics. When you view the pic, click on the 'share' tab and copy the text and paste it in this forum. Good luck

Flash wont help in this image. Try taking the image in late afternoon when the sun is lower in the sky. That way the dynamic range of the tones wont be so high as during mid day sunlight and you will avoid highly contrasted shadows. High ISO should only be used in low light situations or when you need high shutter speeds.

I think I did OK with close up, but struggling to maintain sharpness for the rest...

50mm f/1.8! It's cheap, and it's sharp and it's great for portraits on a cropped sensor like the D90.

If you are still a beginner, the lens you have is good enough unless you need more reach to capture say sports or wildlife. In that case, a cheap lens in the 55 to 300mm lens will do. You seem to also like macro, so maybe a fixed length cheap macro lens could help.

But before investing in new equipment, I would suggest to keep learning with what you have until you really feel that you are limited by your equipment.

    EG: the 1.2 isn't THAT cheap...the 1.8 is ;-) But I was told Canon's 1.8 doesn't have good bokeh (only have a 5 blade iris?)

Personally the Tamron 60mm macro f/2 is quite good even compared with Canon's or Nikon's similar macro, and they're only f2.8
