I've got avatars turned off... forget what mine is, but no doubt it either a cute munky, which represents me, or a stern gorilla, which is also me.

I chose mine because I ... hmm.. like it. A few months back I was exploring a web cam snapshot program called snap and took several pictures of myself via my web cam applying several effects on them. One of them was so good that I chose it to be my profile picture on a few sites. Here I initially wanted to choose my profile picture as an avatar, a one where I am eating chocolate cake, but then on a last minute I decided to choose the alien avatar. For sure it must describe something in me, how I sometimes feel ... ;D
