Thread: Duri? And Caltex American school?

  1. #1

Question Duri? And Caltex American school?

Can anyone tell me about Duri? Is it a small town? What is the terrain? Anyone know about the school there? We live in the U.S. with 2 small children and my husband was offered an opportunity there. Any info would be appreciated! Is there a large group of expats there? Is it safe for us to travel around locally?

duri is 4-5 hours driving from pekanbaru
it's a remote town, home of some oil & gas companies
i think the city will be comparable to others oil/gas cities in indonesia
developed and will be quite different from outside areas

i have no idea how update is wikimapia image
but you can see the satellite image view of the city from this link
    http://wikimapia.org/#y=1260000&x=101210000&z=13&m=s
    zoom in for better view

inside duri should be safe enough
but i have no idea about traveling outside duri

    Default Duri and/or Sumatra island

We are American looking at a job opportunity there, can you tell me about the area. Is it hard to find things? Are there Americans/expats there? Things to do with young children? We currently live in a very hot, and very dry climate...almost desert like. Can you tell me more about the climate? I know it's warm all year because it's right around the equator. What can I expect for rain? Anyone know anything about Caltex American School? Is it a decent school? There is so much to think about. I'm very active where we live with moms groups, church, book club, exercising....do you think I will be able to find similar things? Do you feel safe? I read that Jakarta is polluted, how about remote areas? How is the air quality?
    Thanks!

I live on Sumatra and have two small children. We do enjoy it here and can find *most* things that we need. Yes, we do feel safe.
What you can find in terms of an expat community and community activities will depend largely on where you are. Church shouldn't be too difficult to find as there are very many Christian churches around, and presumably playgroups and social clubs that go along with it.
To be honest we do find it a bit difficult to find things for the kids to do at times, and the six week "summer" school break is a bit of a killer but we try to addres sthis by travelling as much as possible. One of the greatest advantages of living here is the ease of travel to other destinations in SEA.

Frazzled perhaps, but the school year has begun again and all is well again.
