Atlantis made a good point if your KITAS will expire next month - you don't have the time to switch sponsors.

Sorry I haven't replied sooner....been very busy. 8 visits to imigrasi and 3 to Kanwil in the past two weeks. Tomorrow it's the overnight train to Jakarta. I was also under the impression that I wouldn't have enough time, but the head of immigration (subsi penentuan I think is her title), a very helpful lady who deserves a mention: Ibu Dian, has arranged to expedite the switch of sponsorship and concurrently extend my kitas. Although things seem to run smoothly and quickly when being handled by her, despite the delays for trivial things which I'd been conditioned to expect, I haven't had the same luck with Kanwil. Ibu Dian told me I would be able to post the application to Jakarta, but Kanwil lady overruled her and made it clear I had to make the journey, although I fail to see why but haven't argued the point.
My main concern is the holidays for Independence day and Idul Fitri, which are definitely not in my favour. Worst case scenario means a trip to Singapore or KL.
More later. Thanks for your words of support guys.

I'll PM you contact info for DirJenIm. I don't know why the KanWil lady is forcing you to go, but I think you should ask DirJenIm first.

After a hasty day trip to Jakarta I am still in shock as to how smoothly everything went. I took an overnight train so was on the doorstep of the Kanim at 7:30am after a hairy ojek ride from the station. The first person I encountered was an incredibly helpful lady named Yusi. I was all prepared to plea for a quick turnaround so I could perhaps stay overnight and collect my letter without having to return to Yogyakarta. Mbk Yusi simply said that it would be ready by 2pm. When I explained that I would wait in the waiting area because a) I had nowhere else to go and b) I was due to catch a flight at 5:30 she said " In that case we must get this done as soon as possible" and she did. By 12 noon I had the letter in my bag and was flagging down a taxi to the airport. I'd been expecting all kinds of delays, excuses and obstacles placed in my way and all I got were smiles and co-operation. Unbelievable!
Bear in mind that this process not only changes my sponsor, but also extends my present kitas. It's obviously too early to start counting chickens just yet, but things are looking good. A couple more minor glitches at this end with the kanwil but fingers crossed. So far I've made ten trips to the local kanim and five to the kanwil. I'm back on Thursday to collect my letter of permission from the kanwil and take to the kanim, where the lovely Bu Dian has promised that everything will be done and dusted in time.
I'll let you know. Thanks again to all concerned and especially to ReveurGAM who PMd some useful info.

After dropping my daughter at school this morning (Thursday Aug 9th) I headed straight to the kanwil and was there as they opened at 8am, where I collected my letters to take to imigrasi. A blast across town (my poor little Yamaha has had some thrashing of late) and into kanim by 8:15. Again, unbelievably, by 8:30 (having just paid the fee and been photographed) I was tripping lightly down the front steps bearing a letter to collect my kitas on the 16th. Costs so far, apart from transport to Jakarta and other running around, RP755.000 for kitas plus RP10.000 for two forms.
If anybody out there knows of an email address for the Dirjen of imigrasi, I would be grateful for it as I feel it only right to show my appreciation of the excellent service his/her staff has demonstrated. Once again, sincere thanks to all on the forum who have been so kind with offers of advice. You made it possible. One final (I hope) question...I believe that it is no longer necessary to report to the police within 7 days of receiving a kitas. Is that so? I don't want to fall foul of the old bill after all this.

Congratulations . You were really lucky by having to deal with such good officers .

Below are the time limits .
Remember that for reporting to the province's Police (POLDA) for the SKLD , you will first need to get the STM at your local Police . For the first STM , if Police asks when you moved to your address , tell him/her "less than 24 hours" .

[the person who gives shelter (hotel, wife, friend...etc) has to report you in the delay of 24 hours after your arrival]

[People with KITAP/KITAP are supposed to report in the 30 days of issuance of their Residency Permit and have 7 days to report any change (Pasal 19, ayat 1 dan ayat 2, Peraturan pemerintah nomor 31 tahun 1994 tentang Pengawasan Orang Asing).]

The other registration is at Catatan Sipil , which need to be done within 14 days after the KITAS .

Sorry, I should check in more often I know. Wow...and I thought I'd done the difficult bit. Looks like it's just beginning. Marcus, thank you for the advice above. When you say, ' The report for the STM , at the local Police , should be done within 24 hours if you didn't do it before' does this mean within 24 hours from now or what? I live almost next door to a polres, does that count as local police and can I get it done there? Sorry for my ignorance here.

You are supposed to report to POLSEK (the local command) when your status changes eg from Sosbud to KITAS, KITAS 1 to 2, KITAS to KITAP. KITAS holders are to report to POLDA for issue of SKLD and again when status changes as above. I did all three ie POLSEK, POLRES then POLDA when I first moved to KITAS. Se also this thread for the latest on penalties: http://www.livinginindonesiaforum.or...iting-8-months and this for info on fees: http://www.livinginindonesiaforum.or...-New-JUNE-2010

    (1) It is 24 hours after you start living in a private house/apt. After that , better tell them that you were in a hotel or similar .
See the "24 hours" subject at the ref. below .

    http://www.livinginindonesiaforum.or...ering%20polisi (STM, SKLD , post no.2)

    (2) I got my STM at POLRI . I don't know if it is possible at POLRES .
