Sarimanouk is the name of the kind of ship used by early migrants from the Archipelago who settled in Madagaskar (the name Sarimanouk comes from a type of sacred bird found in Balinese mythology). The Sarimanouk jazz group formed in 2008 is comprised of four musicians, Talafaral Ramiandriosa (saxophone), Yudo Nugroho Doni Sundjojo (double bass), Julian Abraham Marantika (piano), dan Sandy Winarta (drums). Influenced by the music of Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Max Roach, John Coltrane, and Miles Davis, Sarimanouk Quartet is a modern jazz group with roots in the Post Bop style. Like sailors on the “sarimanouk” explored the seas of long ago, the musicians in this group are always exploring sounds from different kinds of music. Come and listen to their jazz concert at Salihara Theater this month.
