  • Tanzania Evicting 40,000 Maasai for Dubai Royalty.

According to the article, the Maasai in the area are being evicted in a deal brokered through a "luxury safari company" for the royal family of Dubai. Their land is to be used as a private hunting playground for those pukes, and the compensation is supposed to be like... 350,000 pounds?! The article suggests it will effect many thousands, 40,000 directly.

As usual, I have an aversion to indigenous peoples getting the short end of the stick. This is particularly odious for me as it involves aristocrats, a population I'd rather see beheaded than cherished. Speaking of which, I certainly do hope that the Maasai go along with the deal... and then also renege on it while the brave Arab hunters are there. What they do with the Arabs and their cronies, who likely number far less than 40,000, is their business, but I propose that they unilaterally shit all over them when the tables are turned.

WTF. This is some colonial era type crap. The Maasai lifestyle requires huge amounts of land. This means the death of their culture and societal system, not just the loss of land. What's more, the money is like an extra slap in the face. It's like $13 per person.
Messed up as it is, I think it will go through. If Tanzania is anything like Kenya, the vast majority of the population will be concerned only with the status and standing of their own ethnic group, and what is happening will be seen as "unfair", but also "not my problem".

This is really disturbing - both that it could be let happen by Tanzania, but equally that the "Dubai nobility" (where do they get off?) think it is OK to do this!
          Things happen for a reason...

True. I wonder how many change.org petitions are circulating at the moment?

The Maasai should adopt the French method for dealing with Royalty.

Ultimately if the Masai don't want them there they can probably keep them out. They may have to resort to violence though.

Would you sympathize with such methods?

You intend drawing a parallel with Aceh/Java?

Can't you hear the sucking sound of the Ache vacuum trying to suck in a parallel argument?
