• police versus military: rock em, sock em robots

    http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2...-shooting.html

Can either/any of our Batam members shed light on this incident, especially the claim that the soldiers were "merely complaining to the police about their friend being raided" but supposedly had no financial interest as "protectors" of the diesel fuel hoarder.

At least they had the sense to go to the police station unarmed, or there could have been a blood bath.

Remember "never bring a sword to a gunfight"? Maybe the new saying should be "never bring a loud mouth full of insults to a gun fight".

It was reported they were all shot in the thigh. Either the police were aiming for their heads or their aim has improved. According to a relative in the AGO for that area, the police and military have been at odds ever since they were split up. Batam is for some reason, more full of this competition then most places.

One commentator pointed out that the HQ for each group is unusually close to the other, compared to other provincial capitals. This excerpt from the article suggests that there was initially some restraint before shooting. I wonder how much time went by before "provocation" (threats?) became intolerable:

"Eyewitnesses said the soldiers were unarmed upon their arrival on Sunday evening, but added the soldiers had provoked the police officers on duty, which lead to a scuffle."

I'm guessing Batam is also a hub for all kinds of lucrative smuggling schemes, due to proximity to Singapore and the Kawasan Ekonomi Khusus. So naturally, turf wars escalate more often.
